Hong Kong: what next?

I managed to catch Revolution of our Times at the tonight.

I'd recommend to anyone with any interest in the events in HK up to 2019 if you're able to see it where you are.
an incredibly powerful documentary. never before heard people crying at the cinema.
I wish I could say more about it but still feeling lost for words.

This is a very good piece from Iain Marlow and Shirley Zhou at Bloomberg.

A broad look at how and why the political changes in Hong Kong inevitably led to the place being overwhelmed by Omicron.

That's 6,221 deaths, so far, in March 2022 alone. This will likely be our deadliest month with Omicron and, hopefully, with SARS-Cov2.

That equates to @ 56,000 deaths in the UK or @ 275,000 in the USA. In under a month.

I think I mentioned previously that Omicron is swift, brutal (particularly to the healthcare system,) and lethal (in a sero-negative, elderly population). And it is.

It's been a hell of a month - and it ain't over yet.

Be safe peeps. Look after each other.

Be kind.

Apparently, there are some 1,500 - 2,000 children - *under ten years old - (tested positive,) in hospitals, separated from their parents who are not allowed to visit them.

Elderly peoples' families are being denied access to their sick parents/grandparents in hospital. Many are dying without families present. Last minute video calls will be arranged where possible (although a bit late by then methinks).

It's a clusterfuck.

BREAKING:

It sounds like the UK Judicial body is withdrawing all British judges currently sitting on Hong Kong's Court of Final Appeal (CFA).

*Edit is directly below ...

'The Foreign Ministry's office in Hong Kong also weighed in, saying it "strongly deplored" Britain's decision to pull the two senior judges from the top court.

"By playing the 'foreign judges' card, it (Britain) attempts to maliciously vilify China's policies for Hong Kong and to discredit the development of Hong Kong's rule of law," the Commissioner's Office said in a statement.'

The thing is ... the reason the UK can no longer allow UK judges to sit on the CFA, is that in Hong Kong, now, the "rule of law" being referenced is the National Security Law, not the Common Law as previously practiced.

The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

I wonder ... how long it will take for the other Common Law countries to withdraw their judges from the CFA? Too long?

(Edit: *to add a link and a comment.)

I'm quite surprised that the uk still appointed hk judges (have i understood that correctly?) Or that china allowed them to. I guess that must have been part of the handover agreement?

I guess they will be replaced with chinese mainland judges now? :(

So we've shipped in 600 top experts in Chinese medicine to Hong Kong from the mainland. They are "overseeing" our doctors (who are all impeccably trained in proper medicine). What could possibly go wrong?

And, meanwhile, several of the previous organisers of the Confederation of Trade Unions (CTU) - the decades-old, largest trade union umbrella-organisation in HK - which disbanded in October 2021 due to the political environment, were today detained by national security police.

All completely fucking normal. Obviously.

God Bless the CCP! ;)

Have a good April Fools Day peeps. :(

Anyway, the Orc-Arab-Stasi-Nihilist-Leprechaun is here tomorrow night.

So I'll report back as soon as I'm compos mentis again ...

... Hopefully.

Be nice to each other.

Come Bells. Bed.

you guess pretty much right. the HK Court of Final Appeal was established in 97 as part of the handover. to replace the UK Privy Council's role in the legal system there.
the non-permanent judges can be recruited from any common-law jurisdiction. there's been Australian, New Zealander and Canadian as well as English.
this was supposed to give confidence in the rule of law there. and help maintain judicial independence / HK's guaranteed autonomy from the national government.
notably the PRC is based on a civil law not common law system.

Looking forward to seeing the last of Carrie Lam, I would be even happier if I thought there was any chance of her successor not being even worse.

It was and is, almost certainly, going to be John Lee.

The ill-educated cop, groomed by the CCP for decades.

I posted this on the 17th Feb 2022 ...

"Meanwhile, I think the CE has been sidelined, in favour of the (2nd in charge puppet,) Chief Secretary, John Lee, previously Security Secretary, previously Top Cop and lifelong ill-educated Popo - he joined aged 20, no degree and no prior qualifications listed. Looks like he received an on-line-only Masters degree from an obscure Australian Institution sometime in the 1990's, paid for by the govt. Born and bred CCP man.

Things are looking very, very grim.

Omicron is completely out of control.

This is unacceptable to the CCP, who have now taken complete control of the situation.

John Lee (not Carrie Lam,) is in charge of "liaising" with the Beijing and Guangzhou authorities to oversee the pandemic response.

There are dark times coming over the next few weeks. It's going to get very messy.

I fear it won't be pretty."

First it was the, allegedly-corrupt and long-compromised, CCP-linked businessman Tung Chee-hwa.

Then the allegedly-corrupt civil servant Donald Tsang.

Then the allegedly-corrupt businessman Leung Chun-ying, groomed by the CCP since long before 1993.

Then the allegedly-human civil servant Carrie Lam, who oversaw the decimation of everything.

And now likely an ill-educated, CCP-groomed, cop.

I wonder if PK Tang (cop,) will slip into the Chief Secretary role or whether the allegedly-corrupt-and-slimy Paul Chan will slither in before him.

Either way, it's conclusive of Hong Kong's submergence into a full-on Police State. There's worse yet to come. This year. It won't be on TV.

Thailand has gone. Burma has gone. Belarus has gone. The Philippines has gone. And so many more places over the last two decades.

We were the last front-line. We fought for freedom. Civilians. Youths. Without weapons. We lost. Worse is now to come. Much worse.

(Not aimed at you Yoss, obviously, just a rant.)

Now it's Ukraine.

Next Taiwan.

Wake up.

Be nice.

Bells?

This guy has been a CCP insider since before he was born.

"Lau said Hong Kong will need a strong leader in the next five years, and he believes the central government has already decided who that should be."

Happy days.

R.I.P.

The 15th of January 1929 - the 4th of April 1968.

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today!"

(The 28th of August 1963.)

1649097317168.png

(May 1956.)

And on the 3rd of April 1968 - the day before he died - he made his last speech, in which he said:

"I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will ... "

And yet, here we fucking are, still fucking fighting.

What a fucking species!

Rest peeps.

Bed Bells.

Oh my goodness. What a kerfuffle!

We share a short time on this planet, good Urbanites.

Let's not waste it. Pick your fellow travellers carefully!

The Declaration of Independence was a visionary masterpiece of principle; elucidated by a cluster of extraordinary polymaths.

As the famous educationalist, Margaret Mead, once commented (shortly before her death in 1978, I think):

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

She also said an enormous amount of other good stuff too. She understood children and learning. Look her up! As Hannah Arendt was was to political philosophy, Mead was to progressive education!

Anyway ...

One of those founding fathers was born on the 13th of April 1743 and died on the 4th of July 1826.

I do want to make it clear though that I've never owned 600 slaves and will likely die before I'm 70 - let alone 83.*

It was merely a mishap of birth.

Be good to each other peeps. We don't have much time left.

Blessings one and all. :)

;)

And keep thinking! 🐬

(EDIT: 'Cos I can't count. I think he was 83* at death, not 86. Oh well. I'm usually wrong, I'm used to having to correct myself. Apologies.)
