Happy ... er ... new year, it's the 2023 album recommendations thread!

Only an ep but I really like this collection of retro sounding ambient tracks.
A Place in Time Called You and Me - Whispers of the Heart
"Whispers of the Heart' is the debut record by 'A Place in Time Called You and Me'. A magical mix of japanese ambient, children music, vintage cartoon music and incidental toy music, all filtered through their lovely and cozy analogue synths.
For fans of: Brian Eno, Plantasia, Haruomi Hosono, Hiroshi Yoshimura, Wendy Carlos, Isao Tomita, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Suzanne Ciani, Satoshi Ashikawa, Harold Budd

Mandy, Indiana - I've Seen a Way

This is great, kind of weird echoey experimental dance noise. Reminds me of The Knife/Fever Ray and Crystal Castles without sounding like either.

It's only sort of new, but a mixtape by Sean from Autechre has surfaced on YouTube, with his approval. I can definitely hear bits of what went onto become album tracks circa Quaristice, I think.

Haven't heard the whole album yet but what I've listened to so far is great. Will probably get this, out on the 9th of June & available for pre-order.

Hak Baker - Worlds End

Out today.

Just had my first listen.

Unsurprisingly it's brilliant - hypnotic and mesmerising from start to finish - with the possible highlight being this absolute stunner:

Will definitely feature in my AOTY list - the guy's a fucking genius

Does your copy have the 75 minute closing track on it? Bandcamp doesn't list it, but it came with it when I downloaded it from there.

I'd file this as world fusion.... though above all its all very French to my ears

Sissoko/Segal/Parisien/Peirani - mixes Sissoko's Malian kora riffs with what to me sounds a lot like French / Balkan folk - with jazz solos - nice little home/summer listening thing
quite bluesy

Just came here to recommend that too, it's pretty cool - kind of reminds me a bit of Vangelis Blade Runner soundtrack in a way, but with drums and weird vocals.

I'm really enjoying Lana Del Rey's latest album "Did you know there's a tunnel under ocean boulevard?". Admittedly, the only album I bought this year ;) (Taylor Swift's I listened to, but haven't actually purchased a hard copy of it).

Lots of great songs, and in true form, they get better the more I listen to... Like Radiohead, I guess.

And one she made a video for

Another vote here - it's just magnificent. Mesmerising is right - after a while it feels like it's actually playing not through your speakers but inside your head.

The lead track from The New Pornographers latest. Far from their greatest but another hooky track.

This is only an EP but my thread, I'll bend the rules if I like :D

Anyway, I figure it's definitely good enough to bend the rules for: Lara Jones, Fig.

I wasn't familiar with her before but she's playing near me next month and the description immediately reeled me in: 'pulsating electronics using saxophone, synths, beats, live processing, voice and field recording ... New EP Fig is explosive and chaotic with rampant breakbeats and glitchy electronics. It's also powerful and intimate with queer energy ...'

Can't ask for more than that

A new collection by Shirley Collins out today

.

I went to see Shirley Collins at the Brighton Dome last weekend which was rather nice.

She was struggling a little - she said she's waiting for a hip operation, she had to be wheeled on stage in a wheelchair and lifted into a chair. She said her health was affecting her voice too. I don't imagine she'll be playing too many more gigs :(.

The gig was ok, but possibly to give Shirley some rest, the set was peppered with tracks sung by other members of her band and these were of a totally different vibe - amusing ditties about being caught with yer breaches down - which I wasn't into at all. There were also long instrumental sections so that a bunch of Morris dancers could flail about with their hankies. I know Morris is all part of the folk tradition - but hmmm - I went to the gig to see Shirley Collins!

She played a lot of the tracks off this new album - but I almost enjoyed listening to it more this morning, unsullied by the singing and dancing of others :D.
