Hamas/Israel conflict: news and discussion

You have to admire those members of the IDF who feel the need to keep killing people in the Gaza Strip right up until the deadline.
What is the [expletive] point?

It sends out the message that they're merciless. I actually think that that message was a big point for the entire thing. "The only language the Arabs understand is the language of force."

The birth of Zionism must also be seen in the context of the invention of nationalism. In the period in Europe following the French Revolution of 1789 the concept of the nation state came to be popular. This was not unconnected to the development of capitalism.
Essentially, if everyone else is benefiting from having their own states, and if they don't want us in those, why don't we make our own?

Not a completely unreasonable question, under the circumstances.

oh the odd are not done will killing people cease fire or no cease fire.. they will slow down the killing ..

A lot of people asking that question are after an answer along the lines that Jews are evil.
No. Maybe the history shows the inhumanity of humans and that racism never has an answer to their motives. The hate towards Jewish people down through history is intolerable. To resolve the present situation I think the whole history has to be looked at.

Doctors Against Genocide have put out a statement on the ceasefire:

The ceasefire offers a much awaited relief, for our People in Gaza but it is no substitute for justice. The genocide in Gaza has claimed countless lives, targeted healthcare workers, destroyed hospitals, and shattered communities.

We demand accountability, the dismantling of the Genocide Enablement Apparatus, the end of the occupation, the dismantling of the apartheid system, the full human rights for our people, and our own self determination and immediate global action to correct centuries old injustices. Without justice, this horror will continue unchecked.

I heard someone on telly (it could have been BBC News) say that Gaza should be administered by the [very corrupt] Palestinian Authority and unnamed international actors. I'm just wondering who these international actors are likely to be.

As for reconstruction: I suspect this will come with some serious strings attached. Especially, if the US is involved.
