Max Verstappen had words with dad Jos after slamming Red Bull over Sergio Perez win

Max Verstappen spoke with his father Jos after he complained about the tactics used by Red Bull which helped Sergio Perez to win the Monaco Grand Prix. The result was a good one for the team, with Perez taking the victory ahead of Carlos Sainz while Verstappen finished third to score better than Charles Leclerc. It meant the Dutchman extended his lead at the top of the drivers' table, while Red Bull outscored Ferrari in their quest for constructors' championship success. But that wasn't enough for retired racer Jos Verstappen, who felt his offspring should have been given more of a chance to win for himself. In a column he admitted that he was "not entirely objective", but still bemoaned the fact the defending world champion had played second fiddle to his team-mate.

"Red Bull achieved a good result, but at the same time exerted little influence to help Max to the front," wrote the 50-year-old, who did not win a race in his own F1 career. "That he finished third, he owes to Ferrari's mistake at that second stop of Charles Leclerc. The championship leader, Max, was not helped in that sense by the chosen strategy. It turned completely to Checo's favour. That was disappointing to me, and I would have liked it to be different for the championship leader. I would have liked them to go for Max, but of course I am not entirely objective. I think 10 points from Max have been thrown away here."

Speaking ahead of this weekend's Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Max Verstappen revealed that he has spoken with his father about the subject. While the team might not have taken too kindly to the criticism, the younger Dutchman defended his father's opinion and reaction to the result. "As my father wrote, he is not completely objective," the Red Bull ace told reporters. "He just wants to see me win. It's his opinion. I also told my dad that Sunday's events were a result of Saturday, when that red flag ruined my qualifying. That was the biggest problem, because in Monaco you can't overtake. Fine, that was one race, we'll just move on now."

After taking the lead in both championships, Red Bull are favoured to increase their advantage this weekend in Baku. The unique street circuit's layout favours a low-downforce set-up, which the Milton Keynes outfit are used to running on many occasions anyway. For Ferrari, the race is a chance to retake control of the title race after letting slip of the early-season advantage they gave themselves. After victories for Leclerc in two of the first three races, the Italian team have watched as Red Bull won the next four in a row and find themselves 36 points behind in the team standings.

FP2 in Baku

Charles Leclerc went fastest during FP2 for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, ahead of both Red Bull cars and a quick-looking Fernando Alonso. The eighth round of the world championship is in full swing and it’s the three championship leaders that have been setting the pace so far in Azerbaijan, with Leclerc and Sergio Perez now 1-1 in terms of practice sessions topped. Indeed, Perez went fastest from Leclerc earlier on in FP1 but roles were reversed in FP2, with the Ferrari man looking to get some momentum back after a couple of disappointing races.

Fernando Alonso, as mentioned, was fourth in the Alpine with him following up his top 5 time in FP1 with another good posting – he’s running quite a low downforce set-up and it appears to be working for him as things stand. Carlos Sainz sat fifth in the other Ferrari ahead of Pierre Gasly in the AlphaTauri and George Russell in the Mercedes. The other AlphaTauri of Yuki Tsunoda went eighth fastest, meaning the team have got both cars into the top ten in both practice sessions so far, and Esteban Ocon was in ninth to allow Alpine to say the same thing.

Lando Norris, meanwhile, completed the top ten in the McLaren. Elsewhere, Lewis Hamilton was 12th-fastest whilst the Alfa Romeo cars of Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanu were 14th and 15th respectively. Mick Schumacher and Nicholas Latifi got more running in after issues in FP1 limited their lap count but could only go 19th and 20th fastest.

Max Verstappen spoke with his father Jos ...
Max's biggest problem is his dad.

Compare and contrast what happened when Hammy had a record-breaking 8th world championship stolen last year by the combination of Red Bull pressure and Mr Masi's supine response.

While all the protests and lawyering were blowing up, Hammy's dad went up to his son, put his arms around him, and consoled him. Not outrage. Not indignation. Not vainglorious entitlement. Just: this how it ended; there's a next time.

Pure class.

And then look what happened:

Hamilton Senior was even an example to Jos. But Jos failed the test. Jos is a far more diminished person in the light of his comments.

But what do I know?

ok catching up on pull up

do we expect red bull to get a tug on the flappy rear wing :hmm:

car in p1 or p2 in both sessions but horner "well it harming our preformace"

also jos was a prick on the race track and is a women beating cunt

only surprised Max is not more of an entitled prick like his father
fair play to him for defending Perez

Second change made to Formula 1’s pit lane entry rules for Azerbaijan GP

The FIA has made a second change to the pit lane entry rules for this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The pit lane entrance at the Baku City Circuit has been called one of the most dangerous locations on the F1 calendar. F1 cars reach speeds of well over 300kph as they reach the pit lane entrance. Drivers cross a dashed white line as they enter the pits. FIA F1 race director Niels Wittich issued a rules clarification yesterday starting that “for safety reasons, any driver continuing on the track may not cross that line in any direction.”

In a further update issued ahead of final practice on Saturday morning, Which added a further note regarding the solid white line which leads up to the pit lane entrance. “Any car with all four wheels to the left of the solid white must enter the pit lane, if in the opinion of the stewards, the driver has committed to entering the pit lane, except in cases of force majeure accepted as such by the stewards,” he stated.

Another dashed line precedes this solid white line, which drivers are allowed to cross. During F1’s first race at the track in 2016 Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen was given a five-second time penalty for crossing the solid white line approaching the pits. F1’s regulations regarding pit lane entrances can vary from track to track due to differences in their configurations. The rule being used in Baku differs from that seen in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix earlier this year.

During that race at Jeddah Corniche Circuit Max Verstappen complained Charles Leclerc has crossed part of the pit lane entrance line while defending his position. However the drivers’ guidance for the race at Jeddah Corniche Circuit stated only that “drivers must keep to the left of the of the solid white line immediately prior to the pit entry when they are entering the pits.”

Free Practice 3 Results

Sergio Perez's fine form at the Baku City Circuit continued with the fastest lap in final practice. Last year's Azerbaijan Grand Prix winner had been fastest in FP1 before Charles Leclerc hit back in the second session but as temperatures cooled, Perez posted a one minute, 43.170secs, 0.070s faster than the Ferrari driver.

Max Verstappen finished third but had his first timed run disrupted by yellow flags following Valtteri Bottas' off-track excursion at turn three in the best of the conditions. Carlos Sainz was four-tenths slower than Perez ahead of both McLarens, who enjoyed a much more positive hour of running.

The start of the session was delayed by 15 minutes whilst circuit officials repaired the Tecpro barrier at turn one after a four-car incident at the end of the preceding F2 race. With track temperatures much higher than what would be expected as the sun sets in qualifying, teams waited until the very end of the session before posting their representative times. Traffic was also highlighted as an issue ahead of qualifying with Verstappen impeded on his final timed lap. Leclerc also failed to complete his final flying lap having locked up into turn 15, having to bail out and take to the escape road.

Lando Norris ended the session 1.2s adrift of Perez, with team-mate Daniel Ricciardo crucially within half-a-tenth of his team-mate to provide optimism amidst the scrutiny surrounding the Australian. Pierre Gasly finished seventh for AlphaTauri, with a time near-identical to Ricciardo to set up a tantalising battle for the best-of-the-rest positions.

Mercedes played their strategic hand early ahead of the grand prix by scrubbing up a new set of hard tyres in preparation for the race, but whilst the team seemingly eased some of the violent bouncing that plagued its Friday running the fitting of its Barcelona-spec floor no doubt helping both drivers struggled with the rear of the car. George Russell again was the lead Silver Arrow, finishing a tenth adrift of Gasly but two-tenths and four places ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Esteban Ocon and Sebastian Vettel rounded out the top 10 for Alpine and Aston Martin.

So will the start of quali be delayed because FP3 was, or is there no such rule requiring a minimum time gap between the sessions? The Swedes I was listening to earlier seemed unsure.

Albon on Swedish TV interview just now basically straight out accusing Alonso of going off the circuit to create a yellow flag to prevent others from beating his time, and saying F1 needs a rule like indycar has, which penalises drivers for creating a caution during quali.
