England v South Africa Test Series

I never doubted we'd hang on for a minute. :hmm:

TMS were saying Durban should favour the bowlers so they'll probably stick with 4 bowlers and Bell will get another chance. Has he ever played a really important, match saving/winning innings? Seems to shit out when the chips are down.

Any bloody excuse not to drop Bell eh? Goddamnit.

He had a good run against Pakistan a few years back at number 6 I think, a few tons on the trot. Not to excuse him though.

jimmy anderson's twitter at the start of the day: "Huge day today. Wolves v Burnley 1.30pm."
jimmy anderson's twitter an hour ago: "Comfortable draw in the end!! Wish Burnley could have drawn today."

Arguably, his 70-odd at The Oval this summer helped put England in a position to win the Ashes. Not that I'm defending his current selection.

If England do want to play 6 batsmen, they should use that spot to blood a younger player. Perhaps Bopara would have had a happier year if he'd been given a run at no. 6.

Fair point, that's what probably booked his seat on the plane.
I don't want to sound like I'm hounding him out of the team, on his day, and he's had a few good knocks obvously, he can bat. Perhaps too much is expected of him because he was touted by so many as the next great middle order batsmen. His average is just under 39 at test level which is not too shabby to be fair. He's just never inspired me with any confidence that he could go out there when our back is against the wall and turn it around for us.
Compare him to another middle order batsmen from the same era with almost identical tests played, Paul Collingwood. His average is almost 43. He's usually batted lower down the order than Bell, often guiding the tail through to the end and grabbing himself a century. Saved us on a few occassions and was there at the end again today. (Although I don't think he should have exposed Onions to that last over!)
I'd put Bell in the Hick and Ramprakash envelope. Who do we have out there as an alternative if we stick with 4 bowlers? Or is there an 'A' tour going on somewhere with a promising batsman?

easy to say that but he had to think about the last three balls of the penultimate over - face those and hope to grab a single as well

judgment call, I won't criticise him for it

Forgive me for being pedantic but I think they took the single and Colly faced the last 2 balls of the penultimate over. Which I think makes a difference at that stage in the game. Colly came down to face 2 balls and left Onions with 6. Perhaps if there would have been 3 to face it would have been a good call as he would have had 3 chances to then get a single to get up the other end. No harm done in the end though.

Was it? Good point if that's so.

I await Discordia's prediction on the entertainment value of the Second Test with great anticipation btw

You can say one thing about following England in recent years, it's not dull! I really enjoyed this match. It's what I'd call a 'proper' match. 4 innings, tide turning several times, technology contraversy and of course Boycott talking about uncovered wickets. Only way I think it could have been improved is if England's target was achievable so maybe 285-300ish. SA were never going to realistically offer such a target in the 1st game of a series though! Great game I thought and fair result, all told.

SA would never offer a target like that full stop. They're way too conservative for that

True. I expect we would be too especially the first game in a series. But if we had bowled them out for 225-250 in the second innings instead of them declaring at 300+ then we might have tried to go for it instead of batting out the day. Which was a great achievement in itself but we were realistically never going to get 360 to win in 96 overs.
Anyway, good start to the series. Sets it all up nicely.

Enjoying Vaughan as a summariser and finding this series really interesting. I think this and the Aussie series has really shown so far the lack of truly amazing fast bowlers at the moment and the general tepidness of pitches. There are good bowlers on both sides for sure, but no one is quite an Ambrose or Donald type figure.
