England cricket, 2019-20 winter tours

"I've been very surprised with South Africa's bowling. They haven't bowled anything short. Oh, that's hit Crawley on the noggin."

Fair point though. Nothing short until then.

Why don't professional cricketers carry a spare helmet? How many times do we have to go through this silly dance?

A decent day. Lost a wicket or two more than ideal and the wickets we lost were not due to anything unusual happening with ball, maybe Crawley's aside which looked like it reversed a bit. Root is still there and Pope looks in decent touch if a little flustered towards the end. We bat deep and with weather around we should just bat time.

Not so far off the position at the end of day 1 last time, albeit after a session less of play. 350 has to be a decent score here. Get that and I think England are in charge again.

Don't want to get too ahead of myself, but both Crawley and Sibley may be establishing themselves here as first choice top order. Rory Burns may have to displace Denly instead to get back in, which he may well do tbf. Denly has felt like a bit of a stop-gap for a while now. It may be hard for Bairstow to get back into this team the way they're going. And Buttler may just be playing his last test - noises are that Foakes is in line to come back in for SL. If he does as well as he did last time, I'd like to see him retained this time.

Burns will still be ahead of Crawley I'd say - he's made centuries which Crawley hasn't done as yet. He'll be straight back in. Agree they might drop Denly though - he looks like a decent enough option in the absence of alternatives but not much more.

"Come say that to me outside you fucking four-eyed cunt."

Oh dear. Reminds me of the kids at my school. Cricinfo can't decide whether that's a level 1,2,3 or 4 offence. You really didn't need to say that Stokes, but then again you were compared to Ed Sheeran. Apparently.

Denly barely found the middle of the bat, so that's another problem.

Anyway, Root's due no? So nothing to worry about. Maybe.

"The ECB may also be underwhelmed with the [Stokes] incident. The sponsors of Test cricket in England are Specsavers..."

First time I've had much of a look at Crawley. He looked excellent until up to 50 or so. Playing his shots and not looking in any trouble.

I like the look of this England side. Has potential. Needs a couple of changes but we might be there or thereabouts come the next Ashes.

Crawley looks a bit more like a 3 to me, plays a few too many shots as an opener for my liking. Anyway we need a top 3 and we can shuffle the pack from there. Totally agree regarding Denly.

This is the Wanderers right? The only ground in the world where they built a tunnel to protect the players? The same ground that Merv Hughes had to go out to bat with all the saffas smashing the perspex?

Fuck this bollocks.

Yep. Crawley down to 3, Burns back to opening would be my guess as well. Those three plus Root, Stokes, Pope, and suddenly England look like they might just have a top order.

Denly's had a remarkable series really. In six knocks so far, his lowest score is 25. Problem is, his highest score is 50, and he's only passed 40 once. He's done a job, though, bit like Compton did in India a few years ago. I'm sure he'll go to Sri Lanka if only because of his leggies, but unless he gets his first hundred there, I think it will be 'many thanks and bye' come the summer.

After Burns's injury Denly is always going to Sri Lanka. Regardless of what he does he was always a stop gap and he won't be pulling on a England cap this coming summer. Fair play to him because its been a very tricky international career and he's done OK but all things considered an average of 31 doesn't cut it at the top level.

By the way, did everyone else see all the weird purring about Pope's century and how one day he may bat at 3. What a luxury to hide down at 6 and then be talked about being a top 3 at some point.

Surrey CCC and Cranleigh. What a lovely world.

Yeah bit odd tbh. I'd swap him with Stokes and have him at five, then leave him there if possible. Directly after Root, so that he can bat with Root lots, like he did today, seems a good plan to me. He bats a bit like Ian Bell, and Bell did very well coming in after Pietersen. Looking it up, Bell's best positions by far were five and six. Keep Pope down there as well.

Is it wrong for special players to get special treatment? I dunno. Root was dropped in Aus to basically protect him from further damage, while Carberry was offered up as a sacrifice. Carberry's treatment was wrong, but was Root's?

499 last time out. Now 44 for Sibley, 66 for Crawley, 100 opening partnership, unbeaten 50s so far for Pope and Root.

It's almost as if we're not shit at batting after all. How much of this is down to England being good, and how much to a SA attack which with all due respect is not Donald, Pollock, Kallis, Steyn, Morkel?

Lots down to the attack but Pope is a real find. Currently averaging 255 in this series.

Dead as a contest now. Racking up the runs at pace.

300-7, but it is still two proper batsmen at the crease (Woakes has a test century). Wood and Broad are both better than the traditional number 11 too (even if Broad has forgotten that), so no panic just yet. Play a few shots, treat any runs that come as a bonus and get the bowlers ready - focus on what Nortje has done well in these conditions and 300+ looks a competitive score.

Their (SA) batting is crap. Sure they have a big score in them but not very often. Runs on the board already and if we can edge it to 350 I reckon its a strong position to be in.

Prediction. If Nortje is bowling, Broad won't last 6 balls. Bouncy pitch at altitude. Just be happy if he doesn't get hit tbh . Agree though that 350 is a good score.

SA look beaten already tbh, Nortje aside. Weird defensive fields, senior bowler awol.

Lowest top-score in a total of 400+ ever. Team effort!

SA openers are battling hard, but I can smell a collapse around the corner. Seems to be the kind of wicket on which wickets fall in clusters. Another cluster coming after tea, I reckon.
