you've really never heard that before?
it always went like that: bad food, bad teeth, pompous attitude. sorry :(
you're also really well-loved for the Beatles, your comedy, and the royals (sorry again)

Stop saying sorry after being insulting.

I'm afraid that she's right. :(

Britain has a rep for lots of good things; but its native cuisine isn't one of them.

After the war, Britain suffered from rations and all round austerity and as a result British cuisine became rather dull as we relied on limited resources. Luckily, those days are over and British cuisine has been revived, so those cliches about bad food, while accurate in the 70s, no longer apply now. Besides, there are plenty of other cuisines to sample in the UK as it is absorbed many over the past 50 years.

I imagine that the French, the Italians etc suffered from shortages during and after the war as well; they didn't attract the same reputation for boring food, though.

I don't think British food is bad. I was just wondering what the practice of continuously trashing other people's food was all about?

I have a friend from Romania. She is so much fun to eat with because she just loves everything. I guess in Romania, they just had chicken, all the time. There was no such thing as bacon (either kind), or shellfish, or many other things we take for granted.
What is my point? I'm not actually sure. :hmm:

I don't think there is anything wrong with British food and I don't think there ever was. I have enjoyed my food all my life. I even liked school dinners when other kids were saying how they didn't. Those dinners were classic British dishes. People just seem to like being negative about things that are British.

ok..that's nice. I feel the same way. When I went to college and there were so many choices in the cafeteria, I thought it was awesome yet all the rich kids were always complaining about it which really bothered me.

It's probably rivalry but many Americans seem to think we have rubbish food over here. Which we do of course have but you have to look for it. The same as you do in America.

that's true. it does go both ways.

I still feel very  about the bacon thing though.

It's kind of like saying "ice cream sucks. we eat sorbet. sorbet is better, for reasons a,b, and c. but mostly because it's what we eat"

same thing with the mayo vs. butter issue, tbf. they're just different types of flavors. get over it.

no, you just have a limited understanding of the meaning of bacon :p

I indulged in a bit of Dijon this evening.

Yesterday's fried spud / braised veggies bulked out with rice ...
A bit too much fish sauce
Grey Poupon mustard
tahini
date/tamarind chutney ...
Prepared in a wok and eaten with chopsticks as is my wont ...
Washed down with a southern French red straight out of the bottle.

Name that cuisine. ;)

I think the main backlash against british food came after cheap holidays abroad. Everyone was disovering new tastes, new vegetables etc. However, it is fair to say the average French, Spanish, Italian eats far healthier than the average Brit even today.

Some classic British dishes do neet careful cooking. Not evryone can get it right from raw ingredients.

I think this is a different thread mind.

My bacon was not quite 100% tonight, I fried it in a bit of olive oil, should I have used butter?

Lard, butter tends to burn at too low a temperature to feasibly fry bacon in it. Olive oil's crap though - I'd like to see a return to the days when it was only used as arselube and people had to sign a register at the chemist in order to obtain a bottle.

this is what I'm talking about! where does this attitude come from? Olive oil (which happens to be revered throughout the world for its flavor and health benefits)is crap?

so we have so far:

bacon (crispy)
olive oil
mayonnaise
pancakes (the non-English kind)

and I'm sure there's many more I've heard over the years here.
so, tell me, you all-knowing food experts, what else is crap?

TBF most people in the UK like olive oil, I suspect I'm very much a minority in favouring lard.

well, in any case I still think it's odd.
people seem to go around saying things suck that they know don't actually suck.

Here, people might say "Bud Light sucks" and as we all know, it is the truth.
But people don't go around randomly claiming benign things such as spaghetti, or waffles, or maple syrup "suck"
It just confuses/surprises me, I guess.
