Cheese and onion roll

Ideally I’d like a crusty roll or baguette.
The cheese has to be grated.
The onion should be more finely cut

Made a couple on Thursday using Sao Jorge cheese which is hard cheese from the Azores which is tangy like cheddar, white onion and a papo seco ( bread roll) which had a bit of a crust. Fantastic.

Looby that's a bit gutting about discontinued small chunk Branston's. I also have lump issues and was a fan of the more accessible pickle.

These days I tend to go for chilli jam in my cheese roll, like the middle class ponce I've apparently become

You can still buy small chunk I think, just not smooth.

I like chilli jam too but prefer that on a cracker to a roll.

Yes. Cut too many oblongs so they don't all fit comfortably in the roll, so you just have to eat some before wrapping it up. Oh well nevermind. ✔

Na matter, cheese and onion rolls are food of the fucking gods; up there with pickled egg in a bag of ready salted.

I love a cheese and pickle roll but I don’t like the lumps. Unfortunately Branston seem to have discontinued smooth pickle.

Usually I go for a red onion marmalade.

Obviously with ready salted crisps or chunky chips if at the pub.

Until recently I would have 100% agreed with you but Tesco sea salt and chardonnay vinegar crisps have me in an absolute chokehold at the moment.

Cream cheese isn't proper cheese. You could blend cheddar and banas together though.

Cheese and raw onion in a soft bap are a thing around my way in some older pubs where they haven't gone gastro, bit thin on the fillings

Oh yes, and I even managed to convert my eldest and, though he lives in the foothills of the Museli Mountain, loves both Cheese & Onion rolls and pickled eggs in crisps...much to the horror of some of the trendy young things that he hangs with down there on the coast!

When holidaying near St Jean de Luz I was introduced to the delights of Basque cheese, like Ossau-Iraty, with cherry conserve. Saw all the local old folks enjoying the combo with crusty baguette and gave it a go; delicious.
