Perhaps don't try and lecture someone who works for the Berlin LGBT+ center, what their quality of life is like as a gay man living in Germany.

Perhaps Berlin isn't representative of Germany as a whole let alone the EU, I dunno, I'm not a gay man working for an LGBT org so what do I know

Perhaps dont be so pompous Reno? Can't for the life of me see how my post was lecturing anyone I was merely pointing you to the org that compiled the report.

I'm sorry but you can't argue with facts. Germany is 2.5 %. The UK is 39.4 %. You might as well be living in Tehran.

quite so. if people wanted this done with they should have voted for parties suggesting a second referendum or the withdrawal of article 50.
That wasn't really what I meant. We are entering a transition period. Nothing has really changed until things start changing. This Brexit Day bollocks is just Tory propaganda which seems destined to create more division. Which seems to be working.

So why is it that as a gay man who has moved from London to Berlin (in part because of Brexit) I feel so much safer here than I did there ? Despite a rise in homophobic attacks in Germany, recorded LGBT+ hate crimes in Berlin are in the hundreds, while in London they are in the thousands. Even accounting for that Berlin has half the population of London that's a massive difference.

It is true that the UK is ahead of Germany in terms of legislation, which does figure into those statistics but just waving a statistic around without knowing how to interpret it doesn't really cut it.

Good thing that there’s no far right violence/ electoral gains in Germany I guess

I am mourning my loss of rights and freedoms and bracing myself for some really illiberal policies in 2021. So, when are all those celebrating the end of the "dictatorship from Brussels" going to wake up to the "dictatorship from Mar el Lago"? I'm not holding my breath.

Having moved to London as a queer kid in the 80s, because the UK struck me as far more tolerant of minorities, I left London soon after Brexit because the small minded insularity on display is not the country where I once felt welcome. So it is ironic that on a thread about Brexit you are trying to put me right that as a queer immigrant I would have been better off staying in the UK by waving a statistic around. Apparently I upended my entire life for nothing after 33 years in the UK, while you are sitting on your arse, making a point on an discussion board.

Well we are both sitting on our arses making points on a discussion board . If you feel safer in a Germany I’m pleased for you however if you have a beef with the German report challenge the authors of it . Really no wish to fall out with you personally over this .

It'll never 'be done'.

Oh goody, we can 'strike our own trade deals'.

In the same way we have an 'independent nuclear threat'.

If the EU don't like an aspect of a trade deal we strike, they withhold / withdraw their trade deal.
Is this true? If so it doesn’t put the cuddly EU in a good light does it?
