Big name brands and companies on the verge of collapse

I'm not surprised frankly, their prices are absolutely astronomic. The Card Factory does three cards for 99p. And they're pretty nice, too. Feel very much for the staff though. :(

Always astounded at how difficult it is find a non-hideous card in a card shop. Why is that?
when you were in the area, you should have tried the one between West Norwood and Tulse Hill. The usual hideous and cringeworthy assortment, but a lot more which somebody might like.

End up sending quite a lot of birthday cards etc to Ireland and France. As postage now costs £1.23 each probably won't bother

Why? Can't say I've noticed a drop-off in the giving or receiving of cards.

At a guess, because Clinton Cards were bloody expensive, and the same or similar shit became available at a fraction of the cost in supermarkets, pound shops and the likes.

As 'virtually' a card only store, I've been puzzled by their continued existence for some years now.

Another big gap in our high street, its on course like Bradford to be one of the cities to fail...

not as bad as Detroit, but still...

I was always amazed that they could be viable.

I mean there are only two main reasons a year to buy cards, birthdays and christmas.

There's a 'Superstore' near my work.

A whole lot of their range was "who the fuck buys this shit" (Forevever Friends style/some godawful 40's range/valentines cards for grandmother/Pancake Day Cards I'm looking at you here).

Milking it off the desperate and disorganised who have left it until the last minute, or the divs who think spending minimum 3.49 on a card is reasonable. Add in 1.99 for a roll of paper... christ what's the mark-up on these things?

It's kind of profound in a way. The idea of a card is to let someone know that you are thinking of them but then a card shop full of twee cards is designed to let someone know that you are thinking of them without actually giving it any thought

Chocolate fireguard shop

Kuntz in Covent Garden closed a while back. I bought my mate a card in there that featured an octogenarian getting it up the bomb-bay in a reverse-anal-cowgirl pose. Clintons failed to spot that gap in the market and continued to ply their lame duck offerings and now they're finished, it's no surprise tbh.

Because you can buy cards all over the place in more general purpose stores for less money. Also, people facebook each other nowdays.

Ah, I don't get my cards from supermarkets, only from places as expensive as or more expensive than Clintons. Not usually from Clintons though.

Do they do good cards now then?

Rather my impression of supermarket cards, family viewing versions of the ones I like.

I am sorry for the employees of Clintons, but this is a very funny thread. I hate the products of most card shops with their artificial cringeworthy sentimentality. I always go for a card with a landscape or nature photograph and put my own message on it. They keep them in a drawer under all the crap and you have to ask for them. Why do they always produce cards for specific groups of people? This limits choice. "Happy Birthday 23 year old left handed vegetarian nephew" doesn't cut it. They should make them more general. That was one of their mistakes.
