Any other idiots (like me) still smoking? This virus means time to stop & wld love mutual support.

I stopped fags and went to vaping last week - partly because I had a cold and was sick of it, but also because of the corona.

Vaping definitely does make your lungs and general system healthier. I spent some years vaping and when I was, I basically never got any respiratory illness at all. Since going back on the fags every winter has been a constant period of snot and coughing. Not inhaling any drugs at all is of course going to be the gold standard here, but not inhaling poison smoke has to be a step forward.

I love fags though. I really do like smoking :(

What flavours you currently vaping?

Sweetheart has COPD (amongst other health issues) and stopped actually buying any tobacco just after Xmas...which means I have too. However, this has been an up and down trip with some scrounging (he even accosted my hairdresser) and hanging wistfully around anyone puffing in public. And there is the matter of weed...which increased to immense proportions after smoking neat spliffs. With the aid of a couple of pipes, I would say that while a completely nicotine free day is rare, consumption overall is a teeny fraction of what it once was...so baby steps.
I reactivated my ancient puffer but none of my batteries are any cop and even a new one has failed to work (and the shit in the shop refused to refund my money because I had opened the packet and broken the seal (obviously)., so have given up on that. Miraculously, I have been maintaining a biscuit free diet (amongst other snacking pleasures now curtailed) and am still not buying/eating popcorn, toffees or whole tubs of ice-cream (although I fell foul of Haribos left on kitchen table by thoughtless offspring).
I am hoping to negotiate fortnghtly pick-ups of my script (of more pressing concern than corona...apart from sweetheart's parlous health) and fuck off to the woods (tons of work needing doing)..
Have been in a knitting frenzy which gives me summat to do with my hands (instead of rolling joints). I admit to being very anxious indeed - not really so much for me (although the knock-on effects if it's curtains would be horrendous) but sweetheart and my beloved D-i-L are very much at risk.

Liquorice roots - the old fashioned type we used to call 'spanish'. Look like twigs, taste vaguely like tobacco (because cig manufacturers sweeten cigarettes with liquorice), give you something to chew, twiddle, spit, punctuate sentences with. Available in Holland & Barrett, chemists etc. I smoked for nearly 30 years, then vaped. Now I chew twigs. And miss smoking.

“Especially FORMER smokers” .. what?
Don't worry about it. Even smokers might well still only get the mild form if they get it, which you may well not. Not worth worrying about unless you have a serious underlying medical condition or are very old.

The evidence of the benefits of giving up and the reversal of most of the damage in most people is extremely robust, a different order of robustness than anything here, from longitudinal studies of millions of people over decades. ;)

This is a brilliant idea, I love those didn’t know you could still get them .
Am struggling and grumpy asfuck .

Not in any way scientific this but when I used to smoke loads of weed I also used to get every cold/bug/chest infection going #justsaying

Were you toking with other people?

Think Pickman's is onto summat here. despairing of dribbly spliffs with horrendous roaches, mean amounts of weed, uneven texture etc etc...I tend to roll my own manicured and perfect little numbers which are destined for my lips alone.. With a firm (biased) belief in the therapeutic capabilities of large quantities of THC, I never seem to get ill at all (just dodgy feet and creaky knees - that sort of stuff.

ACE is angiotensin converting enzyme, the inhibition of which reduces blood pressure. That article explains why people receiving ACE inhibitor treatment, such as lisinopril, are more susceptible to the virus.

I quit smoking 5 years ago, probably the best thing ive ever done. I feel like a new person

I'm about three years now, smoked for 50 years, stopped in 17 days. Lung cancer tends to give you the impetus for a rapid stop. :) I can honestly say that I don't miss it at all.

yes, yes for weed
Well, I spent a not insubstantial sum on weed vapourisers (Volcanos, Q10, Da Vinci come to mind)...as well as extracting oil and even smoking those spendy prefilled capsules...and in all honesty, the only bearable substitute for spliffery has been a decent pipe with a charcoal filter. All the flavour...none of that fucking about charging batteries (which always crap out when they are an internal part of the machine).
So, in my journey to vice-free almost sobriety (far to go still). a nice briar pipe is proving the most successful.
