Albums Of The Year 2008

i think my list had about 7 albums in. which was about 2 less than the amount of new albums i actually heard/bought in 2008.

one of mine was glasvegas. i've not heard any of the others in this list. oh, except for maybe one track from DLD. which i completely forgot about anyway. i could have had a good listen if i rememberd it was from this year and then nominated it.

very angry and disgusted that GA's "out of control" isn't in the top ten, though. you lot are all too Real Urbans.

Fucking Bon Iver AND MGMT.....jesus fucking wept. Good to see Fuck Buttons in there but the list veers from "woo" to "get the fuck outta here" from one entry to the next. IMO of course :D

let's have your individual nominations now then.

I didn't do a proper list as I knew I;d spend ages being completist about it so whacked in a very short list which ran something like this:

1.Fuck Buttons
2.The War On Drugs
3. forget what i put
4. Crystal Stilts
5. Vivian Girls

My actual favourite album of the year is Women which although on sale at Rough Trade for a couple of months isn't officially out til mid-Jan and will therefore be forgotten about when we compile our 2009 lists but avoid that album at your peril; it's a perfect fusion of lo-fi hiss and mathy pomp. Takes about five listens to get its true genius.

MGMT is should be called MGPS (as in musical Magpies; the most derivative plagiaristic shit out there)

Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Elfuckingbow:confused::hmm:

Earth - The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull

I love you sometimes urban, you can vote for indie bollocks but still put what is basically a doom album in the top 10. This is great and fully deserves to be one of those albums that *mutter* transcends genre *shuffles feet* and crops up in music collections of people who don't normally listen to doom.

hooray, so i did hear a new album this year! this is v v good. i probably also would have said the new bohren album, if i had remembered.

good work as ever bluey - i particularly enjoyed your unusually terse comments :D

I would of had UNKLE, El Guincho, +10, Metronomy, Somatic Response in there too if I could. I'm glad M83 got on the list, haven't seen anyone mention them before on here so wasn't sure if they'd turn up.

Thanks for all the hard work Bluestreak.

No wonder she left you, you wet git.

LMAO. That had me and Idioteque in hysterics.

Thanks Bluestreak for doing this, seems like a lot of effort but I'm always excited to see it.

Not overly impressed with the nominations this year, I think KoL, Fucked Up, Nick Cave, Sigur Ros and Portishead were the only ones which I voted for.

Can't remember my entire list, but it also included The Bronx, Thrice, Conor Oberst, Cancer Bats, Black Lungs, of Montreal and Genghis Tron.

I am surprised that The Bronx, and of Montreal aren't on there. I would urge you all to listen to The Bronx III and Skeletal Lamping, as they are superb albums.

I've got four of five albums on the download now, so thanks for the recommendations.

You should get the Vivian Girls one. I reckon you would like that.

crystal stilts would have been on my list but it's not out here until feb.

It's being re-released on Angular, a UK label in Feb. Was available last year and made Rough Trade Shops Top 50. You've been reading press releases again;)

EMO :p

;)

I love this thread. It means christmas is coming for one thing. For another, the combo of bluey's write-ups followed by jeff's comments always makes me laugh and feels like being in your favourite pub. And finally, for the first time ever, I actually have the number one album and am getting number two for xmas. So that either means that a) I still have it or b) urban is becoming a middle aged mum  :D

Great that Earth got in there, and that was without my help because I was under the false impression it was released last year.

This thread has made me realise just how little new music I've been listening to this year - of the top 30 I've only heard 5, and only 1 was on my list.

<fires up soulseek>

I am younger, and probably wankier than you, and I think they are rubbish.

Perhaps you are not young and wanky enough?

My ten:

#1: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds ~ Dig, Lazarus, Dig!
#2: Black Mountain ~ In The Future
#3: The Ruby Suns ~ Sea Lion
#4: Ty Segall ~ Ty Segall
#5: Who's Afear'd ~ The Day Of The Badger
#6: Deerhunter ~ Microcastle
#7: Earth ~ The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull
#8: Goldfrapp ~ Seventh Tree
#9: White Denim ~ Workout Holiday/Exposion
#10: James Blackshaw ~ Litany Of Echoes

In retrospect, I wish I'd included Q-Tip's Renaissance. Plus loads of others of course...
