2021 Local elections

Doubled from last time on a smaller turnout so % would be more than twice last time I think

Disgruntled Labour lefts unhappy with Starmer & Rees but with a second choice vote for safety if they want to stop a particular candidate - I went TUSC/Rees for that very reason

I saw they were an SWP rapist front and ran away. Wankers.

So allegedly the local muslim community were up in arms about Akehurst (specifically what I don't know but he's a war mongering Islamophobe so could be anything he said or did tbh) and a WhatsApp campaign was launched to boycott Labour. And lo, he was booted out.
TBF, that ward (St Mary's) has been held by the Greens for a long time so it's not surprising he was beaten. (It has quite a large Pakistani/Bangladeshi population but also a lot of students, presumably some of whom were still about and voting).

Pls do not dispel my beautiful image

Bristol City Council, Labour lose overall control:

Labour 24 (-13)
Green 24 (+13)
Con 14 (nc)
Lib Dem 8 (nc)

Absolute shocker of an election for Labour. Didn't just lose in the woolly liberal muesli belt of Bishopston etc but managed to lose seats to the Greens in more w/c areas like Eastville, Bedminster, Lockleaze (on a 40 point swing!) & Lawrence Hill. Labour did manage to avoid meltdown around the edges of the city however, vote holding up pretty well in areas where the Tories were the main threat. Which should tell them something.

After Rees' return last night, this is a sobering moment. Must have been a fair amount of split ticket voting with Rees for mayor but Greens for the council
Just noticed that Jo Sergeant - a Corbynite councillor who defected from Labour to the Greens a couple of months ago - only failed to retain her seat by 16 votes in Avonmouth & Lawrence Weston.
For anyone who doesn't know, Avonmouth & El Dub is... quite a long way from the muesli belt, geographically, politically and economically. I grew up there and it's council estates and industrial employment. A socialist Green just nearly won there.

Oops

The Conservative candidate to be Wiltshire’s next police and crime commissioner has been disbarred due to a historic drink-driving offence, the party has said — less than 24 hours before the result was due to be declared.

Jonathon Seed was widely expected to be elected at the county’s PCC when votes are counted on Monday.

A Conservative spokesperson said: “Due to a historic driving offence that has come to light, the candidate has been disbarred from becoming the police and crime commissioner.”

Although does say "Jonathon Seed remains favourite to win the contest"

Labour winning in the heartlands.

Labour won in Chipping Norton the other year as well, district council that time I think. It's not that unusual for small towns to vote Labour at the local level even if they get swamped by the rural vote at Westminster

Bridgwater, Wellington and Paulton in Somerset for eg are all Labour towns even if they get Tory MPs

Just looked up Hastings-St Leonards, and it has its own doughnut effect, but a half-doughnut cos of the sea. Near the sea/near the centre: Labour or Green; far from the sea/centre in the suburban bits: Tory.

Much the same as what has happened in Worthing.

But at parliament level, it has 2 MPs, Worthing East [Lab] includes the Adur District Council area, whilst Worthing West [Lab in the centre] includes Tory suburban areas & loads of villages in the Arun District Council area, both Adur & Arun remains very strong Tory areas, which will counter whatever is happening in the centre & east of Worthing town.

How did Labour do in blackbird leys and cowley (the place not the student road)?
Held both BBL and Northfield Brook wards (essentially BBL and Greater Leys) as expected. Not sure what turnout was but the number of votes looks small in BBL. The ward boundaries have changed so one Cowley ward (Cowley Marsh) looks to have been subsumed into a couple of others. Labour took both seats in Cowley Ward and one in Temple Cowley, with the other going to a disgraced former Lib Dem then Labour councillor standing as an independent.

In general terms, Labour are down two seats in the city but still hold 34/48 seats, still no Tories.

Yep. Hastings at Westminster is a Lab/Tory marginal. Currently tory. Fucking Rye is included - that's what swings it.

Hastings Old Town voted Green. It's the slightly more expensive to live in hippy area. Good to see stereotypes playing to type. :D

West St Leonards is retirement-central. Sure enough it went tory.
