Your daily cat and kitten news

I know!!! The choices are overwhelming, I hate it! I picked the one with the most positive reviews, not that it's any guarantee. But, as I said before, when I asked for recommendation NO ONE came up with one, despite me knowing so many people with cats :(

I'm quite pleased with the app as well, very intuitive and it looks like it's simple to contact customer service should anything go wrong, but, nothing has gone wrong yet, so I can't comment on what their customer service is like... Fingers crossed I never have to find out!

Turns out the calling feature is very useful! Rusty comes running when she hears my recorded voice then a few seconds later down comes the food :D - just a note that the maximum kibble size is 1.5 cm.

Also, it needs to be plugged in to power outlet - the batteries are for backup only. There are models with their own rechargeable battery but I figured that could limit the lifetime of the unit and it means having to recharge battery, one more thing for me to forget. :(

here it is again... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0C2VQDXDB
to save scrolling back up, this thread moves fast!!!

edit: Oh, you need food desiccant to keep the food fresh! Needs changing every two weeks. I just bought this reusable one instead of individual, disposable bags. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B087T2GBPX.
Yeh, but even just checking all the reviews is exhausting innit?!

How long is the power cord? I like the idea of the calling feature, because mine totally knows his name and comes running every time I call him.

I have sachets of dessicant, so sorted for that.

I was tying my shoelaces - unaware that Vic was sat on the coffee table in front of me - but when I raised up my hands I accidentally bopped him quite hard on the chin. He ran off at speed and, so far, he is rebuffing any of my attempts at reconciliation. I feel like a monster ☹️

I crushed Jocky's paw under my trainered feet at 5.30 this morning, because he was doing that cat thing of obstructing my route to his food and suddenly his paw was just under me somehow. Solidarity fistbump.

The number of times I've accidentally whacked a cat in the face when I've moved and they've moved at the same time or have been silently hovering or approaching - I mean none of my cats were/are the reserved aloof sort and having ones that need to be Right There All The Time just increases the risk of accidental boppage.
Sonic was particularly at risk because he followed me around all the time and was well camouflaged by the flooring, used to call him Captain Underfoot and I was always tripping over him or treading on a paw or catching him with my foot  and once had to take him to the vet cos I shut his paw in the sitting room door  😭

I nearly decapitated Raz once, she would streak into the gap as I closed doors!! SHAT meself.

Fucking hell, I bet you were shaking for ages after.
Radar had a lot of courage but absolutely zero common sense and went through a few of his nine lives (which in itself is odd for an indoor cat) and left me in tears/shaking a few times in his life (particularly when as a kitten he knocked a large mirror over on top of himself and I could just see a tiny white paw sticking out from underneath it but somehow he was unharmed, and the other when he saw a pigeon on a neighbouring roof and attempted to launch himself at speed through a 2" gap where the window was open and got wedged at the hips, dangling most of the way out of a window gap 3 floors up above concrete pavement and I had to climb up on a chair and pull him back through the gap by his back legs - in some ways he was really intelligent but he had no basic self-preservation instinct).

I think it's 1.5m? But that seems awfully long... Iirc spec said 1.5m, but I think it's more like 1m. Not very long.

Awww, Rusty is the same. Dutifully answers when summoned 😂😍

In fairness, they also bring home presents of food for me :D
Bob once brought a chicken sandwich home for me, and clawed at the glass until I let him in, and he proudly dropped the discarded feast at my feet 😁

I am sure I have posted this before, but I used to be on a Siamese/OSH internet message board, and someone posted (and having seen what cats get up to I have no reason to doubt this) that their Siam once managed to bring a cooked and still steaming leg of lamb through the cat flap one Sunday lunchtime - turned out the neighbours had left it to rest on the kitchen counter and a window open...

Oh he's completely let off - for cats I am sure things are classified as "definitely lunch", "potential lunch", "about the same size as me so it's 50/50 whether it will be lunch", or "better not mess with that" :D

in terry pratchett's 'the unadulterated cat' he says that cats divide other species in to four categories - other cats, food, scruffy barking things, and miscellaneous...

Ah yes - I have a copy of that somewhere - it's actually a pretty good instruction manual for living with a cat :D

I'd absolutely believe it. They develop super feline strength when food is on the menu. I know someone who left a turkey to thaw in a zipped up bag one Christmas. Unfortunately, it wasn't there when... they returned. But Bob did make up for it, when he came up to me at the computer and dropped a massive rat beside my hand on the mouse pad. I did try to explain to him that it was a mouse pad but he was too pleased with himself to give a shit. :D

And Siam/OSH are incredibly muscular and strong when they are in peak health - I have/have had 2 OSH and in their prime they look all slender, shaped like a piece of drainpipe with long skinny legs and tail, and you go to pick one up and it is like picking up a fucking breezeblock, about twice as heavy as they look just because of the sheer muscle.

Jakey's been gradually getting more fussy about his dry food, I'm not sure whether he just forgets that he has some in his bowl or if he's very sensitive to a change in texture/taste if it's been in the bowl for a while - but he won't eat it unless it's been given to him fresh out of the bag, so I've been giving him like 10 biscuits at a time every time I go past his bowl.
I am coming to the conclusion that I just need to feed him 100% wet food (which he eats with gusto) at this stage of his life - all of this is renal food and there aren't many options to try a different brand or flavour of dry, and wet is so expensive, his meals are now going to be more expensive than ours 😭
Anything to keep him happy and fed bless him.

Has he got good teeth?
Maybe dry biscuits are painful to eat if he's getting old and his gums are a bit sensitive.

Refusing to eat 'old' food isn't unusual for cats. They can be fussy little gits.
Mine get a mixture of dry and wet. Most will eat everything but Spud picks out the wet food and leaves the dry. Can't blame him really, as it's probably tastier, but the dry stuff is usually better, and definitely cheaper.
When my dog stopped eating dry food, I put it down to his teeth, and no way was I going to feed him just tinned food, as I couldn't afford it at the time, so I started sprinkling gravy granules on his food and pouring boiling water over it, then let it cool before feeding it to him, and he loved it. Might be worth a try with Jakey.

Make sure the gravy granules don't contain onion or garlic.
