Your daily cat and kitten news

Around an hour ago, Spud went out for his nightly jog, and when he came back in he was making a lot of strange noises in the dining room, so I went to see what he was up to, and he was playing with a friend he'd brought home 🤣

I don't know how birds, mice, etc survive basically unharmed from being escorted to an alien location in someone's mouth, held in place by very sharp teeth.

I don't think he wanted to kill it. He just wanted a friend that wasn't big enough to terrorise him 🤣
He must have picked it up in his mouth at least 20 times before I finally caught him and freed the rodent, and there wasn't a scratch on the mouse. It happily scuttled off into the garden, to live another day :D

I don't think birds often do, they have no natural resistance or immunity to the bacteria in a cat's mouth and even if they get away, they could still become ill and die afterwards.
However, flight gives them a good advantage in terms of not being caught in the first place (at least most species)
I think rodents tend to carry similar bacteria themselves, so are not at the same risk.

that's how mummy kittehs carry kittens around...

when i lived with mogs, one of them was a very efficient mouser, but brought an apparently unharmed mouse in once as he wanted to teach me to catch mice

and the other mog was a bit dopey - the only time i know he caught a mouse, also apparently unharmed - he seemed to want to keep it as a pet...

My Radar used to catch them, take them under our bed, and kill them by treading on their hindquarters and yanking their head sharply upwards while holding it in his mouth, instantly breaking the neck - I think this is how cats tend to dispatch small prey if they are fending for themselves and need to eat - I mean he never did need to eat mice, but just had a strong instinct to kill them right away I think. As you rightly say, it's fairly normal for cats to bring live prey to their humans the same way they would bring it to their kittens to teach them to hunt. Or toy with it for a bit because they've never had to move on from practice hunts to hunting for essential subsistence.

I think one factor especially with small rodents is if a cat has it in their mouth, the rodent tends to go "tharn" so to speak, as appearing to be dead/unresponsive until you are released and might have a chance to make a run for it is a fairly good survival strategy.

Our Vic is a very efficient and ruthless hunting/killing machine. Lil’ Bob hasn’t really grasped this concept and has a history of bringing in rodents, frogs and small birds - just to see what they do. He does this very carefully and gingerly and 99% of what he brings in is caught and released into the wild by us with hardly a scratch.

as well as being st patrick's day, it's also st gertrude's day - patron saint of cats (although the link is a bit fuzzy)

More on the cute kittens theme

I thought they were Somali breed, but mum appears to be a regular broken mackerel tabby, the kittens appear to be ticked tabby though (so dad is probably ticked tabby). Unless their full coat hasn't come through yet.

Lovely video, I particularly like the bit where the kitten was chewing on the human's trousers ❤️
