Why Does America Hate Cuba?

No. People don't panic about immigration - whether that's the bit that comes via camps at Calais or most of it that doesn't. Some people moan. Some grumble. Some tut. Some people make sarky remarks. Some become pessimistic. Some people even get annoyed. In short, there is just the range of reactions you should expect from the British. Panic really doesn't come into it.

but but but.. what about this ?

we should be terrified!

I suppose I can understand the problem with this. Was it certain that they did this, or American propaganda?

actually without reading most of this (bit pissed)

actually live in wakefield? (i used to live near, explains a lot ) ;)

Indeed, once Fidel has died there's a chance that Raoul will negotiate with the US to lift the embargo - there are certainly plenty of US companies that lobby for it every year.

Whereas with the US there's no need to wait for the leader to die to have a change of policy, gotta love democracy...

cuba nasty east european regime moved somewhere warm with decent tunes:(
will be eaten by Us tourist's in the next 20 years.
que nasty law suits form florida based cubans who the orginals ones will hopefully all be dead by then.
The new leaders could build a socalist democratic country funded by Uncle Sam :D.
But more likely try to keep the communist dream alive:facepalm:to be replaced with some russian style klepotcracy when it all goes tits up:(

actually there is a case to be made that Midwich Cuckoos and Day of the Triffids represented a certain, right wing, fear of the other. In the 1950's

:hmm:

Yes, and Space 1999 was a left wing allegory for a Britain set free from American cultural imperialism.

they had some central casting leftie south american who came to realize they were the bad guys think he survived in the end.
the russians were real barstards

Nah, they were proper Rooskis in Red Dawn, they all parachuted in and burned all the (probably unread) books.

Nope, the Cuban's showed up to the party also. Do you not remember the scene in the mayor's office?

IMDB said:
A film depicting the invasion of the United States from the north and south by communist forces from Cuba and Russia in the beginning of WWIII and the efforts of partisans from a small mid-western town to turn back the invasion.

I doubt that. Unlike Eastern Europe, Cuba is home to millions of genuinely committed Communists who will fight for the regime.

Yeah right
trade embargo goes down food, consumer goods, a right to speak your own mind and access to uncensored news.
vs growing your own food waiting in line for everything doctors earning more cash waiting tables etc etc. Not saying your right but I can't see hard core communism surviving if people are given a choice.
If whoever replaces raoul is clever and lucky cuba could become a warm version of sweden funded by tourismn

Russkies and Cubans. I recall the scene where the Cuban Field Officer is talking to a Russian officer about the growing guerrilla resistance of Swayze's "wolverines."

The Russian officer wants good old fashioned counter insurgency stuff,. you know, shoot random civiiians, burn some buildings, a bit of torture. Iron fist stuff.

The Cuban officer, however, knows. He is a Cuban, a revolutionary, an ex guerrilla. He has seen it all before. He shakes his head and knows that the occupiers are doomed. The heroic resistance is unstoppable. He shakes his head at the officers words and walks away.

That's not what I said though. I said there are millions of committed Cuban Communists who will fight for the regime. Which is true. Whether or not they can win the fight is another question.

What is it from the revolution that unites all mainland Cubans?

I think it is fair to answer, national determination and sovereignty. Pride. Independence.

To Cubans, this will always be the single greatest gain of July 26. That in the face of the overwhelming power and unflinching hostility of the USA, Cuba forged its own destiny. To mainland Cubans, national independance is inextricably entwined with Castro and the revolution. they are inseparable. They will fight for that.

What happens after Castro is dependant on the degree that Cuba's national independence is respected. This, Cubans will defend their sovereignty to the death.

The US should realise this and do the right thing
If there is a single shred of decency in Obama's bones, he should immediately normalise all relations with Cuba and hand back Guantanamo Bay.

(Hello Phil)

Nah, not at all true. There are committed revolutionaries left in Cuba, but they are few in number and mostly the wrong side of 60.

why? possibly if cuba stopped locking up gay people or people who don't belive the sun shines out of fidels/rouals backside.

The real reason that the embargo is still in place is that influential Americans had sizeable business interests in Cuba before the revolution that were nationalised without compensation. That is the worst possible crime in the book of the Yanks that actually wield power.

The US considers Latin America to be its backyard, has done ever since the Monroe Doctrine of 1823. They have crushed reformist governments time and again – Nicaragua, Guatemala, Chile. Cuba is one that got away, and it must not be allowed to succeed as it would set an example for others to follow. Obama will do jack shit about changing the attitude towards LA that Monroe exemplifies.

Then we can expect the US to end normal relations with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and a whole host of other nasty regimes that persecute their populations on the basis of lifestyle.

Fidel is loved in Cuba because he is the man who delivered real independance from Yankee imperialism.

Guantanamo should be handed back because it's Cuban.

All trade embargos should end because they represent a gross interference in the affairs of a sovereign nation.

Of course, gay people in america get a real easy ride ennit. It's the land of perfect unbiased freedom for homosexuals in america. Lol. as if.

What I actually meant was; were the missiles actually positioned there or was America making up shit so they had an excuse to attack (ala WMD), not did the event ever occur in history.

I'm quite young and have only recently taken an interest in history/politics and am still learning. We aren't born with unlimited knowledge. I'm sure there are things I know that you don't, but I would never try to make you feel shit for not knowing. I ask questions here because people are very well informed and [generally] pretty willing to educate and for that I am extremely greatful. What I am not greatful for though are pricks trying to insult me for not knowing something.

The ignorance of young people concerning modern history is really quite shocking.

Admittedly, the even that was as far away from me as the Cuba crisis is from rikwakefield was the war (can you guess which war I mean, rik? go on, have a guess), and that's the kind of thing that impinges itself on the mind of several generations.

But still. . .
