Why Does America Hate Cuba?

Born to be Mild
I just found out there's a pretty strict jail penalty for importing Cuban Cigars. I know it's only an example, but what have they done to warrant such treatment?

Because Cuba is unnashamedly communist and they are unbowed!

Because they sited Soviet missiles to be close to the USA.

Because they make good cigars and the Yanks are envious.

In the most simplest terms I have ever seen...this is why :D

But yeah, pretty fucked up that they are still seen as some evil commie state. The trade embargo farce is just that, a farce.

A Cuban Havanna: a fat brown cigar hand rolled on the sweating thighs of beautiful Cuban virgins.

I am not ashamed of not knowing something.

Sorry if I sounded like an arse..but yeah..it did happen :)

The world was pretty much on the brink of World War III at the time. Imagine finding out your enemy has parked X amount of nukes 90 miles from your coastline. It was in response to the US having missile silos in Turkey though. A deal got made in the end by both the US and USSR to remove both sets of missiles. That's a pretty basic overview but do some research on it, it's quite chilling to know how close to the brink it came.

The Cuban missile crisis was the closest the USA & USSR came to direct war during the cold war period.

There are a lot of Cuba Libre types in Florida around Miami and there have been times when they have threatenned invasion of Cuba. Nothing seems to have come of it though.

I have heard of the bay of pigs but I don't recall exactly what happenned.. what happenned?

Cuban exiles trained by the CIA launched an invasion attempt. They had woeful air cover though so were stopped in their tracks very easily.

Edit: Damn you Commie you er...bloody Commie :p

I've also heard that there are a lot of Communist types in Moscow who have sometimes threatened to overthrow the Tsar. Nothing seems to have come of it though.

For fictional references based on fact, I would recommened Godfather Pt II and James Ellory's novel American Tabloid WRT pre-revolutionary Cuba, and why the revolution happened. Another good film about the period as seen from the Whitehouse is 13 Days.

And America doesn't hate Cuba. America loves Cuba. It hates Castro and the Communists there. Indeed, once Fidel has died there's a chance that Raoul will negotiate with the US to lift the embargo - there are certainly plenty of US companies that lobby for it every year.

Sometimes I like discussing things with a real person.

If you're offended by my asking, why bother clicking in and then replying? Seems counter-intuitive to your point.

Thanks for the input anyway.

I've heard there is an angry monk in Germany who thinks we should all stop buying indulgences. Nothing seems to have come of it though.

It's worth watching Che part 1 for some good fictional stuff on the Cuban revolution.

And that revolution did wonders for Cuba. It is by no means a perfect regime but it is far better than what preceded it. It's strongman communism, essentially. But isn't Obama lionised and adored despite the flaws of his governance?

I've heard there are a lot of Visigoth types in northern Italy who sometimes threaten to sack Rome. Nothing seems to have come of it though.

Lots of UK photographers love to go to Cuba because of the colourful and dilapidated buildings. Actually not just the buildings but the general run downedness of the place and of course the ancient American cars.

"Dilapidation tourism" you could call it.
