Who lives in a van? Or wants to?

Spent the first 2 nights in my van on Wednesday and Thursday last week. I loved it.

I'd planned to be away longer but on Friday someone crashed into the back of me. Now I have to dimantle it before the insurance collect it for inspection in case it gets written off as a Cat A or B. The damage is fairly minor but the age measn it'll be uneconcomical to repair. I drove it back 100+ miles after the accident so I'm fairly sure it will just be an S or N but can't take the risk.

Spent 9 months fitting it out ready to use. Absolutely gutted just now. Hopefully I'll be able to buy it back and be quids in.
I'm so sorry, gutted for you x

As with these things it's just such a fucking hassle. The company who are collecting it are based 35 miles away and appear to be a car auction place so I'm 100% it'll be written off because I don't think they've got an interest in saying it's an affordable repair.

Course they can't collect it until Thursday and I'll have to stay in all day, then I probably won't get a decision and won't have the van returned until next week, assuming I want to buy it back. Then I'll have to stay in all day again. I'd be quite happy to drive it to someone locally for an inspection and do the legwork to find someone to do it all tomorrow.

Meanwhile the other driver's insurance are offering me £110 cash to let them sort it out. Never heard of them doing this before but I really can't be arsed spending an hour going through a shitload more questions.

My Elgrand will be in the Suez Canal about now, aboard this elegant vessel. She should have got to Southampton weeks ago but Covid has been very disruptive to shipping.

Also got it remapped today. Feels much smoother (and quicker) so drives more like a car. 1st gear's longer too. Only drove 25 miles home on a 40mph motorway so not sure whether it's made a mad amount of difference.

What does this all actually mean though - DownwardDog?

Sorry to read about the van, hope it's resolved...

Torque is the twisting force produced by the engine and power is that force multiplied by the engine speed. Drag power is the parasitic loss from the transmission - they estimate this by coasting the vehicle in neutral and recording how long it takes to stop the dyno's rollers. It shouldn't normally change so I'm not sure why it does here. So engine power is calculated by taking the power measured at the wheels and adding the drag power back in. 133+59 = 192.

They've got this power increase by dumping more fuel into the engine and possibly offsetting vane position to force higher boost levels (if your vehicle has a variable geometry turbo).

Written off as as an uneconomical repair so I've got the cash and need to sort repairs. It's driveable temporarily at least, just needs a new bumper, a lock mechanism and some body work/chassis pulling out. I can live with most of the the bodywork dents though and luckily the interior is ok. Managed to find a scrapper with the parts, just need to check how easy it is to get my bumper off. If it needs a grinder I'll just get the parts and leave it all up to the garage.

Is that a result? Is the cash > repairs? Sounds like you'll be back on the road for summer...

Yea, should be quids in all being well. Parts should be only £35 if I can get the bumper off this other van I've seen and I've been quoted £120 to sort the chassis out. Money leftover should pay for a trip for a few weeks in September. :)
Good news. Plus come September, you might have a chance of finding somewhere to park up...

Torque is the twisting force produced by the engine and power is that force multiplied by the engine speed.
BHP is torque multiplied by RPM divided by 5252, but that dyno printout doesn't make sense to me. The torque and BHP curves should intersect at 5252 rpm.

This thread needs a bump. Got a bootjump for the Berlingo and finally managed a trip where it wasn't actually wind and horizontal rain. I think I need something a bit bigger though.

Has your car arrived David Clapson? How has your van been over the summer mx wcfc? And did you get yours back from the garage bellaozzydog ?

Yeah, it's been great. I've been to three festivals in it. I've got an awning, but it's only worth putting up when it's raining (which it was at one, though I didn't take any pics). So much better than a tent!

I know it's not a camper but we've been enjoying carting an inordinate amount of shit around the country. Had 3 excellent, isolated camps + a not so isolated festival. Has been great having bikes, SUPs, kayak, multiple tents etc and having a mobile changing room to warm up, get dry etc. Have had some really nice breakfasts on the beach, cooking in the back of the van. I now keep chairs, cooker, coffee, pans etc permanently in the van on the off chance.

I'm now thinking about winter camping and adding bits so I can sleep in it.

I basically want a sleeping platform that sits above the wheel arches in the back but also folds to allow it just to be a platform behind the rear seats. When rear seats are taken out it can just fold into a bed. There's a super smooth, very expensive one made by Ovano that is gorgeous but expensive and probably more slick than I really need or the van warrants.

Someone must have made similar & put plans out there - anyone seen anything on groups/sites?

A snip @ £1700

Well 1ftlb is about 1.36Nm, which would make the crossover around 7,142 (i.e. 5252x1.36), and, if you notice the scale on the left is half that of the one in the right, which'd mean they cross at around 3,571. Which is where they seem to.
Thanks, saved me looking.
I'll wear my glasses next time.

Yeah, that looks a bit "high end".

Mine is something like this -

basically a small single bed, that slides out to make a double, in the unlikely event of someone else wanting to sleep in the van. Plenty of storage underneath, keeps the full length of the van available for long thins, plenty of space to stand up in. Mine came from Van Furniture.

I've seen others, made of metal that fold up against the slide, so take up very little space when folded away.

Nice - I've got 2 rows of seats though so need something to fold back to allow the seats to go back in. As I carry loads of stuff around, the 'bed' needs to be a luggage rack for the rest of the time. Aren't you LWB too? That's a very important 30cm...

Also - where did you get your window blinds? Any good? I was looking at some today but £70?!
