I’ve had similar experiences with my last (X type Jaguar) and current (Chrysler 300) cars

Both, at the time of buying, we're not what I'd call small cars, but over the years became more and more "the norm" when parked up

Depends on you, your size and the car doors. Some car doors you have to open very wide to get in and out of them.

Head room is not much of an issue, it's the leg room. My left leg is screwed up between steering and chest when not on the clutch

Not a problem if you get out of the car through the sunroof.
