How much do you believe car travel costs you per mile?

Electric cars are not affordable for ordinary people and they are given tons of subsidy.
A lot of ordinary people seem to get a 40k car, albeit on tick. There are electric cars less than that now as China starts helping out. The problem was the dinosaur european and american car companies who took too long to get going on them and are still trying to recoup all their R&D costs.

So if no access to credit what do you do? And what’s 40k car on a monthly repayment? And if on tick doesn’t it then get replaced every 3 years or less?

I tend to buy a second hand car for around 3-5k and spend the next decade running jt into the ground.

I think "A lot" and "Ordinary" are doing "a lot" of work here. I don't know many people who can afford a 40 grand car.

As I said above, 80% of all car sales are used. And presumably most of those are under £40k. But to be honest, it can't get much higher than that - someone has to buy them new!

I was talking about the new car market. Though I think after a quick look 30k is a more average price there. An MG4 (which I have driven and is a nice car to drive) is just over 30k. So prices are levelling out between ICE and electric vehicles was my point.

I don't know if we fully understand yet what the second hand EV market will look like.

There are a few people here who seem quite emotionally invested in setting fire to dead dinosaurs beneath their bonnets. You know it's got to stop, right? If you think the government isn't making that easy enough, it's the government action that has to be negotiated with, not the end of fossil fuels.

My driving over the last 12 months cost me £0.35 per mile.
Car actual purchase, not included.
Would it still have cost you 35p per mile if you’d done half or twice as many miles? If not then you’re not answering the question that teuchter is asking

I must have misunderstood the question then ..
OK, and checking back to the OP.

My marginal cost, related to mileage only is £0.20 per mile. This figure is almost all made up of petrol and miles per gallon that my vehicle can achieve but also includes replacement tyres which are also related to mileage.

ETA I might need to check my actual mileage in the period concerned.

I look forward to teuchter adding your figures to the analysis of similar direct and cogent answers to his question that he will be sharing imminently….
