What's currently good on the BBC iPlayer?

Kin. An Irish series about Dublin crime gangs feuding over drug turf.

Excellent stuff but the Kinsellas must be Ireland's stupidest crime family, and wouldn't have lasted long IRL. It also takes them until the end of the penultimate episode to figure out the solution that's obvious to everyone else by the end of the first.

It's a top watch all the same and there's a second series that's not yet on iPlayer.

Just giving this a go (series 1 is on Netflix now) - it's a lot better than I thought it would be from the comments, though definitely in a league below Love/Hate.

S2 of The Responder.

The recap had me bewildered though (as per). Didn't remember any of that. Now blindly feeling my way through the new series, wondering whether to just give up and rewatch S1.

Was S1 any good?

I can't remember a thing about it but Mrs S says that I didn't like it.

Finished Spy/Master.

I'm a sucker for Cold War spy stuff and I'm not that demanding of them, but this is a bit of a mess. One big coincidence to power the plot is fine. Once you get to the fourth and fifth, it wears a bit thin.

The Fire Within

Part documentary, part elegy about the work of two French volcanologists, largely based on their own footage

It's visually stunning at times and also emotional as they visit places recently devastated by eruptions

can always delete, which is why I didn’t quote. Tis a doc though. Spoilers only really matter if there’s a twist or summat. IMO.
It was already on my watchlist, but can’t say this knowledge has put me off watching it.

Is there also another volcano doc that came out recenty, possibly a Herzog? Maybe it’s the same film. My watchlists are out of control.

have you seen both? Worth checking out?
I've seen Fire of Love. We were in France, but as it was narrated by Miranda July and by an US production company, we thought it would be okay. But, as the heroes of the film and most off there people who knew them were French..... they didn't bother with the subtitles.

It looked bloody great though.

a narration by Miranda July must be the polar opposite of one by Werner Herzog!

I've just watched all of the new Rebus series.

Based on the Ian Rankin books. A smashing together of a few storylines from a few novels along with a few downright changes to some stuff (his relationship with his boss; his brother; Malcolm Fox from different novels being there at what is effectively the start of the Rebus novels timeline; lots of other stuff too)

I liked it. I like the books and I like the Ken Stott series from a few years back. It has been set in 'now' (more or less) rather than 'then' (80's onward) so it appeals to a new audience. I'm undecided on whether Richard Rankin (no relation) is the 'right' Rebus, but he's a good Rebus.

Anyone else seen it yet? Ep1 was on BBC Scotland last night and BBC 1 England tonight. All of it is on iPlayer now for your viewing pleasure.

I've just started Black Snow. I'm a bit late to the party, but so far so good. I like Aussie dramas, and this one has plenty going for it. I've not warmed to the lead detective character at all. He's a bit comatose.

I think I enjoyed that one, they all blend into one another a bit after a while though (detective/murder type dramas)

They do, and there's a lot of them.

I've ditched most of my streaming services, so I've been looking through Iplayer & ITVx and there's a lot of crime dramas I've never heard of. Some look really shit, like London Kills, but there are some gems. I like Gemma Whelan, so I've sat through both series of The Tower, which is a bit rubbish, but Whelan is really good in it. She's wasted really because it is The Bill level of drama with a better cast.

I've yet to venture on to the 4 app to see what's there.

Dark Hearts. good stuff. don't watch a lot of shooty war stuff but the action scenes here felt about as tense and 'real' as anything I can remember watching recently, and the whole thing was a bit more interesting and thoughtful than the standard modern war dramas.

Darkness; Those Who Kill is excellent. Proper, gasp out loud twists.

Blinded; Those Who Kill, however, whilst not bad, has some ridiculous plot twists that have you screaming in frustration at the telly ‘this would never happen!’ - a decent enough binge though
Grrr - cos the stupid way they've labelled these shows i ended up watching season 2 first, unaware that seasons 1 and 3 even existed. They're all labeled up as series 1. Then i had to work out which one was which so i can watch season 1 before 3. Bloody useless iPlayer!

It is not the greatest to navigate I agree!

been watching this and i think its very good. never saw the oriningal series or know anythying about the books. very well written and excellent performces - and doesnt jump the shark into some ridiculous action movie style gunfights and explosions. quite complex plot wise - winceing at some of the violence but enjoying it.
