What's currently good on the BBC iPlayer?

if you need cheering up after Tish, do yourself a favour and watcn The Assembly. Michael Sheen meets a group of people with a range of disabilities, who ask him a bunch of questions and he answers them. That’s it really - doesn’t sound like much, but it really is just the tonic if you feel you don’t like people much right now. Watch it, it’s only half an hour a long.

I accidentally watched this recently, I think I must have caught it when it was on the TV because I didn't go looking for it - it's very good, and I genuinely think Michael Sheen is a good egg.

Not on the iPlayer, but well worth watching still. Especially towards the end.

We watched a film called Mercy last night. Set in the fifties or sixties (not sure which) Colin Firth stars as a man who makes a bid to sail around the world without stopping. It ends in tragedy. Actually pretty good, even if it does have Colin Firth in, who I’m not amazingly keen on.

The entire 1997 general election:

Got this on today at work, most interesting to see how the media has changed, as well as the result which I was a bit young to follow on tv; though remember listening to it overnight on five live. Was knackered the next day IIRC when I had an athletics meeting having barely slept

Might be a good idea NOT to put the ending of the film in your post!

It's the story of Donald Crowhurst which is well known, especially to people with an interest in that sort of thing. It's not really a spoiler any more than saying 'Hitler died in 1945' is a spoiler to Downfall. More about what led up to it.

I really don't want to pile on sojourner but it was an odd thing to say.

"What you watching?"
"Macbeth"
"Ah, Shakespearean tragedy"
"Fucking hell, you've ruined it now"

:D

(Big hug soj x)

And how would I know his name from just the title of the film? Also, I've never heard of the fella, so even if I HAD known the film was about him, I still wouldn't know what happened to him.

You wouldn't.

The point being, whilst your initial concern about the ending being posted was understandable; it was misplaced because it wasn't a spoiler. :)

I'm a big fan of brutal and hard-going travel/exploration journey stories, so I might have been interested in watching it. Now I already know it ends in tragedy, so it's been spoiled for me.

I'll watch that, I was aware of the story- it's incredible; a real "truth stranger than fiction one" - and I can remember making a mental note when the film came out.

It is though, to anyone who doesn't have your knowledge of the person, the title of the film, and the story behind it.

In the same way that anyone who isn't aware that the Japanese got trounced at the Battle of Midway, might consider a preview mentioning their defeat a spoiler. But it's not particularly important. The outcome isn't the reason most people will enjoy the show. It's about the journey to the outcome!

Anyway. Watch it. It's good.

Sorry, I wish I hadn’t posted the spoiler now, it did cross my mind not to. I felt like I enjoyed the film more knowing what was coming, I suspect they marketed the film originally like that but I don’t know. Anyway a timely reminder not to post spoilers.

Don't worry about it - it's done now, and it's only one film innit? No one died (well, on here, anyway!)
