I feel very sorry to share this, but we have some more troubling news on Scott's medical condition now. He appears to have sustained damage to the speech center of his brain. There is good news too though: he is communicating through writing and he showed a big smile to his parents as they arrived at his hospital bed. Police believe he will eventually have his speech back. Please keep up this incredible outpouring of solidarity, share this page with your friends, denounce police brutality and express your support for Scott. Thank you for following. We are all Scott Olsen
You can't just declare a general strike! That's like the P&P forum calling a general strike then asking the general forum to agree.just had this message from a fb friend:
[27/10/2011 06:57:14] So they are saying a general strike has been called for by the General Committee at #OccupyOakland for Wednesday, November 2. Now it will be up to the other General Committees (and especially to New York) to approve. Would be the first General Strike in the U.S. since 1946, I think. May even go world-wide, I guess, if enough people get on board... big doin's...
I wrote to Mayor Jean Quan, said I thought that shit only happened in Iranshame on you
her btwThere is some unofficial union support for the occupy oakland thing - some ILWU members circulating appeals etc, but there's also been union support for the mayor who orderd the cops in (he's their boy, they funded him). The San Francisco Labor Council have declared the Occupy San Francisco and Occupy Wall Street "sanctioned union strike lines" and offering some form of participation and protection. But a self-selected GC declaring a general strike?

11pm our time (GMT)General Strike Press Conference to announce more details of Nov 2 plans: 4pm Telegraph & Broadway, site of 1946 Oakland General Strike

GENERAL STRIKE --- OAKLAND In addition to staging a walkout of businesses and schools, the protest intends to shut down the Port of Oakland by forming a picket line before the 7 p.m. night shift.
In the city, Occupy San Francisco has also pledged support, with some members planning to meet at Justin Herman Plaza before taking BART to meet up with protesters in Oakland. There is, of course, the possibility that SFPD or BART officials could shutdown San Francisco BART stations during evening commute hours on Wednesday in order to block a mass movement across the Bay
Unions Stand with Occupy Movement in Oakland and Nationwide!!
The Alameda Labor Council and California Labor Federation are standing in solidarity with Occupy Oakland’s Nov. 2 Day of Action. In a message to activists, Council Executive Secretary-Treasurer Josie Camacho says working families are, “inspired by the spirit of the fight against Wall Street.”
This Day of Action will be a public demonstration of support for the right to peaceably assembly without interference, and against the growing wealth and income inequality created by Wall Street and the actions of the richest 1 percent
go on thenI don't get it. Are we outraged at the forces of the state doing their job or pretending to be outraged at the forces of the state doing their job? Maybe the people reactions could be talked about?
Looks like its not true that SEIU local 1021 of Oakland will be actually officially going on strike in defiance of their contract agreements which include no strike clauses while contract is in effect. What will actually take place - while still immensely significant - is that they're pushing for workers to still take part by taking time off, etc..http://seiu1021.org/story/november-2-join-oakland’s-peaceful-day-action
ok, thanks for clearing that up.
(though now I'm wondering about those legal and contractual reasons are)
Thanks for that. The article linked too explains a bit - the unions, and therefore their members, would be 'violating agreed contracts' which would put hem in a difficult position. The unions in the US have even worse anti-union legislation to face than here in the UK. They would actually be officially going on strike in defiance of their contract agreements which include no strike clauses while the previously agreed contract is in effect.
The reason I mentioned primarily the SEIU local is that it is by far the most important Oakland union local (branch) - in terms of size and contracts with Oakland employers
OAKLAND, Calif. - A widely anticipated strike Wednesday by anti-Wall Street demonstrators in Oakland is expected to get a big boost from organized labor and established advocacy groups whose grievances range from school closures and waning union benefits to home foreclosures and cuts to libraries and services for the disabled.
The unions representing Oakland's public school teachers, community college instructors, city government workers and University of California, Berkeley teaching assistants have endorsed the broad-based call to action that is expected to include marches, pickets outside banks and an attempt to shut down the Port of Oakland in the evening.
However, the city's police union in an open letter Tuesday slammed Mayor Jean Quan for her "flip-flop" stance on the city's Occupy Wall Street protests, questioning her motives and why the city plans to beef up its police presence at strike-related events while giving other city workers leeway to participate.
"Is it the city's intention to have city employees on both sides of a skirmish line?" the letter said.
