Some things appear to be grassroots but often these days there is some organised push on social media that has more powerful forces behind it, eg a lot of the far right stuff, fuel/farmers protests. It’s very easy to fake this stuff either to cause social/economic disruption in an ‘enemy’ state or to draw people into particular political spheres - examples of each of these would be the Polish farmer blockades of the Ukrainian border, and some of the Covid loon stuff that has taken people from the hippy left into all kinds of dark places.
