GMB hails reinstatement of 240 sacked Wembley Stadium workers
(Wednesday 15 September 2004)

CONSTRUCTION union GMB hailed a major breakthrough last night in the fight for reinstatement of 240 sacked Wembley Stadium site workers.

GMB general secretary Kevin Curran said: "It looks like we've got an agreement at Wembley. It's a win for Wembley and a win for the workers."

Shop stewards and full-time officers will be recommending the deal to a mass meeting of workers this morning, following talks yesterday.

Mr Curran added: "It's been agreed that there will be a return to work under the blue book national agreements for the industry, with a national bonus and a local bonus, plus full reinstatement within two weeks of all the sacked men."

The sacked workers will also apply for compensation for loss of earnings while they were laid off.

Mr Curran said: "I'm very, very pleased that GMB has stuck with our members through thick and thin and demonstrated that, whatever the threats, GMB will always defend its members."

The 240 sacked workers, members of GMB and Amicus, were originally employed by building firm Cleveland Bridge, which dropped out of the Wembley project.

Their jobs were transferred to employment agency Fast Track, but the new employer refused to honour its obligations under Transfer of Undertakings and Protection of Employment Employment (TUPE) regulations.

The workers staged a mass picket for "justice and reinstatement," after their contracts were terminated when they insisted on their legal rights.

Builders win at Wembley
(Thursday 16 September 2004)
by Roger Bagley
A united team of 240 sacked construction workers celebrated a great victory for trade union rights at the giant Wembley Stadium site yesterday.

After four tough weeks on the picket line, they won full reinstatement to their jobs under agreed terms and conditions.

Bosses were forced to abandon their attempt to inflict longer hours and more oppressive terms by tearing up national agreements.

A determined stand by the workers, who are members of construction unions GMB and amicus, defeated foul play by new employer Fast Track Site Services, which had been brought in by main Wembley contractors Hollandia and Multiplex.

The union victory was also a jolt for callous Tony Blair.

Mr Blair ignored the sacked workers earlier this month as he spoke of his pride in the "flagship" Wembley project, which he believes will help bring the Olympic Games to Britain.

The sacked workers waged a tireless campaign. They lobbied the Football Association and MPs. They sent a 50-strong contingent to the TUC Congress in Brighton, where they won a rousing reception from delegates.

GMB regional organiser Kelly Rogers said: "It really does show the power of the union. It's hats off to these men. I'm very proud to have them as members."

GMB general secretary Kevin Curran said: "These men are proud to be working on the huge Wembley project. They will be going back on the tools, heads held high."

He added: "This is a victory for mature negotiations between unions and employers. It is an example of campaigning trade unionism."

Mr Curran said that the victory was an answer to those people, such as CBI director general Digby Jones, who loved telling the media that the trade unions were "irrelevant."

GMB London regional secretary Paul Kenny said: "The union stood firm against the injustice meted out to these workers and against the legal threats from employers. We resisted the culture of long hours."

Amicus delegates at the TUC sent an immediate message of celebration and congratulation to the Wembley workers.

An amicus spokeswoman said: "We are absolutely delighted that the dispute has been resolved and that our members are free to go back to work."

The workers will begin going back on site next Monday, with all of them returning within two weeks. Each one of them will be on full pay from Monday.

Their jobs were transferred to Fast Track when building firm Cleveland Bridge dropped out of the Wembley contract. But the new contractors refused to honour existing agreements.

Fast Track also demanded a 66-hour working week, which would have meant that the workers, many of them from the north-east, would only have been able to go home for one weekend each month.

Bosses terminated the workers' contracts after they demanded their legal rights under the "blue book" national agreements for the building industry.

Mr Curran said last night: "The message the GMB sends out to employers who try to bin the blue book is this - meddle with our members' basic rights and you face every member of the GMB."

Sorry to bump this thread after so long, but in case anyone is interested,we got the compensation issue sorted out.

Today i have recieved a cheque for three thousand pounds for loss of wages, this does not cover the amount we lost/spent during the lock out but,we decided to settle early rather than drag things out.

Thanks again for all your support during this time,i've just read through the thread again and recall the memories of feeling supported by very special people, thanks.
