US election 2012

"we give 10% of our income to our church" ... I don't think that is the exact same as charitable giving. They are a member of the church they are donating to, they benefit from their own donations.

Not only that, but the church requires members to donate. & those donations are often used to push their conservative political agenda. In 2008 the church gave heavily to a ballot proposition banning gay marriage.

Romneyshambles part 57. Ha ha.

The US Republican nominee is shown saying he could not win votes of 47% of people who do not pay US income tax.
"I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives," he says.
The Mother Jones video is said to have been filmed at a private fundraiser at some point after Mr Romney became the presumptive Republican nominee.
Its picture is blurred out with the exception of Mr Romney's face, and no attendees are visible.

The income tax segment is one of several clips posted online, in which Mr Romney expands at some length on his approach to the upcoming election, and how his campaign will take on President Obama.
"There are 47% of the people who will vote for the president no matter what," Mr Romney is seen saying, referring to the percentage of Americans who have no income tax liability.
"There are 47% who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. "

In spite of Romney's latest gaffes, Torygraph bloggers and their swivel-eyed commenters are in complete and total denial. Doc Stanley thinks the GOP can simply "draft" Prick Sanitorium as a replacement.

Here's a typical comment

Disagree. If he can mobilise the 53% - assuming equal distribution throughout all states - then he is home and dry. Remember Socialists are very sensitive about the spotlight being shone on their supporters. Keep it up Mitt - remind the contributors where their money goes and they will mobilise .
By the way - has it become easier to get a Doctorate recently?

"Socialists". What "socialists"?

Think the blog writer is fully aware switching to Santorum isn't an option, and as to barleymow - he may well be American, they label people using a different yard stick. What surprised me was Tim Stanley thinking it would be a walk in the park for the Republicans -needed too many ducks in a row to be "predicticable", fortunately Romney as he thinks, isn't up to it.

Unfortunately for America, Obama is and always was their Blair, style over substance. His legacy is to leave a lot of people feeling let down and disinfranchised

what, he's claiming the 10 percent tithe- you know, the biblically commanded tithe, one of the conditions of church membership nearly everywhere as charity. Fuck me, he's like the loud giver from that parable!

with his p's he should be donating more than the mandatory 10 percent. The tight fucker.

“There are 47 per cent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what,” Mr. Romney is shown saying in the video of a May 17 fundraiser in Boca Raton, Fla. “There are 47 per cent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it.”

Mr. Romney said in the video that his role “is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

It's a bit of a myth anyway this 47% figure, the number of working-age adulst who pay income tax is over 80% in reality. This 47% figure includes like newborn babies, 90 year old second world war veterans, and a lot of other groups of people who really shouldn't be expected to pay income tax.

Just to put this 47% thing to bed.

Isn't this bordering on fascism?, let the weak defend themselves, if not let them die, that is what they are basically saying, ''entitled to food'', ffs,

what is with that country and its politicians, people cheering Ron Paul when he said he wouldn' help a dying man without heath insurance, socialism or barbarism indeed...

There's some truly dispiriting comments made by the usual suspects in the comment section following that article =/
No matter how bad it gets, there will always be a section of the population labouring under the misapprehension that the people at the bottom, rather than those at the top, are living off their hard work.

Saw another good follow-up comment by Ezra Klein quoted on this:
Here’s the policy two-step behind Romney’s remarks: Republicans have spent years cutting income taxes and increasing things like the Child tax Credit. This means fewer people pay income taxes. So whenever you hear a stat like "47% don't pay income taxes," remember: Reagan and Bush helped build that. These tax cuts for the poor were partly in order to make further tax cuts for the rich political palatable. But now that fewer people pay income taxes as a result of GOP policies, they’re being called lazy and dependent. And thus the GOP's tax cuts are being used to make a case that the rich are overtaxed and that the less-rich are becoming dependent. Which thus leads to a policy agenda of tax cuts for the rich and cuts to social services for the non-rich.

That 47% figure has a good apocalyptic ring to it; shame it's not real. Sounds like the latter days of the Roman Empire, with the tax base disappearing, even as more and more expensive wars are neccessary.

I don't understand the difference between "Pay Income Tax" and "Pay Payroll Tax" ...

If payroll tax is like our PAYE then the 28% do in fact pay income tax, it is just deducted at source.
It's not the same: from my link earlier

"The vast majority of people who escape federal income taxes still pay other taxes, including federal payroll taxes that fund Social Security and Medicare, and excise taxes on gasoline, aviation, alcohol and cigarettes. Many also pay state or local taxes on sales, income and property."

So the 28% are paying income tax, even federal tax, but only for certain elements of the federal government.
