Urban75 Album of the Year - 2024

belboid

Exasperated, not angry.
Yes, it's that time of year again! Welcome to the twentieth iteration of the Urban75 Album of the Year.

You know the score by now. And, frankly, we all have a pretty good idea of the result too. Well, it's down to two really isnt it?

But who will be this seasons Chelsea (the best of the rest?) and which of the two pre-season favourites will hold the other off? Will the eighties legends beat the team that wins whenever it turns up? It's all to play for and there is no state power determining the outcome here (although I am open to offers).

So, please send me lists - it doesn't matter how long they are, 1 album or 30, they all count. Scoring willl follow the belted formula (I considered knotoid, but it sounded silly).

As per,

Votes cast on this thread will not be included, PM'ed ones only.

I do not promise not to fuck it up.

A reminder of those rules again:

1. You PM me a list of your favourite records that were released prior to December 15 2024. In order, from 1 to whatever number you feel like. SOMETIME BEFORE DECEMBER 15TH.
2. I assign points based on your orders of preference. NOTE: If you simply submit a list, unnumbered, I will assume it is in order of 1 to whatever, unless you tell me different
3. Sometime nearer Christmas I give you a rundown, TOTP style, of the top 30, and you lot bicker, complain, and heckle.

Some existing lists:

Sorry, they're a bit shit. They dont seem to be out there yet.

Any chance a mod could fix the title?

Spent an age using the search facility, no results. Browsed the festive forum, nothing.

Get on it! :D

Quietus have posted their top 100 today...

Ex-Easter Island Head at no. 1 - an absolutely superb album that will definitely feature highly on my list too - so good to know that the Quietus and I think alike :D.

I know around 15 of the 100 - so over the coming weeks I'll check out the other 85. Always some gems to discover - though, at the cost of subjecting one's ears to quite a bit of 'what the fuck is this and why would anyone ever want to listen to it?'....

I know 3 out of the top 19, fairly impressed with that rate tbh.

Looking at it again, I think I know 3 out of the top 19, 4 out of the top 100. :D I was going to say "Blimey, the Quietus' opinion of Chat Pile has fallen off since 2022", but I've just checked and they didn't actually chart either year, I just wrongly assumed that they must be one of the rare bands where my music taste and the Quietus' actually cross over. At least we'll always have Charli XCX and Xiu Xiu, I suppose.

Rate Your Music currently have

1) Magdalena Bay
2) Geordie Greep
3) Charli XCX

Being a wiki they've always got a list running.

The Geordie Greep fellow is amazing but like most music now it sounds like its made of plastic. I need some grot.

I actually own nine of them. Which is about six more than normal

rarely have anything to contribute but Ive got a couple this year, both great:
Indica Dubs Showcase Chapter 7
(digi dub)

And the VIsioneers album Def Radio
(jazz funk soul)

Currently got Moscow Death Brigade, Crack Cloud, Quivers, Uniform, Chubby & the Gang, Jade Hairpins, Vincent van Sloth and Kendrick Lamar on my list of albums I should really listen to a fair bit more between now and the 15th. Anyone got any recommendations for what else I need to be listening to more of? Should probably give that Cindy Lee more of a go.

This list has reminded me that there's a few albums I need to listen to more, and that there's a few albums I need to listen to for the first time...

As things stand the only album that has really really grabbed me this year is:

The Oscililation: The Start of the End

Though maybe I'll edit when in a more generous mood!

Fuck it - I've a busy couple of weeks ahead so I'm going to submit my list right now...

So much amazing music again this year... could submit a really long list but I'll restrain myself to 10.

Been listening to afew things off these lists.

The Kim Gordon album is excellent - ditto 'Tigers Blood' by Waxahatchee

I know what my number one is, but the rest might be somewhat haphazard. Should Soccer Mommy or Beabadoobee be higher, for example? I'm also tempted to put underrepresented genre entries quite high, e.g. JPEGMAFIA.

Was made up to see Nadine Shah (my album of the year) and Chelsea Wolfe on the Quietus list, I love them. Glad to see Sahra Halgan on there as well. Ka was one of my favourite discoveries this year, though I've not heard The Thief Next to Jesus yet. Didn't realise Einstürzende Neubauten had one out! Blixa has been busy.

I listened to the NS as part of my end of year catch up. Not with any great expectations, I'd enjoyed her earlier stuff without being blown away, but this is fucking excellent, definitely the Latterly Heard AotY (tho the Peter Perrett is also surprisingly good, would just need a better edit to be brilliant).

If you haven't heard it, correct your mistake now!
