Urban75 Album of the Year 2018 - the Results

Here it is then. After much thought, deliberation, pissing about, and even a bit of sleep, the time is nigh.

A high vote this year, with our usual blend of eclectic, genre busting, age defying, selections. That Low then win.

Or do they?

For the next hour we will control all that you see and hear. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind.... to the outer limits.

Ooh, just remembered that this happened tonight. I'm pouring a large glass of red and settling into the first post. What excitement awaits I wonder? See you back here in a bit.

3 Autechre - NTS sessions 1-4

Lucky 13 for Autechre. Though it’s created by a computer, it will bring you to another plane of human existence if you let it. Apparently.

Oh Sees had two albums in the top 30 last year. This year's effort didn't even chart! Kind of reassuring to know that I'm not the only one who thought it was a bit half-baked.

1 Janelle Monae - Dirty Computer.

With Prince tributes and vagina trousers, Jane 57821 attempts to break free from the constraints of "a totalitarian society that forcibly makes her comply with its homophobic beliefs. Through the power of magnificent dance music. Ironically sick and tired around their relationship dramas constantly getting gossipped about now which just sours its cultural significance it is not.

I still haven't heard this. If I had, and included it in my list, would it have won?
Yup. Incredibly close at the top. Top two a reasonable amount ahead, but very close between the two.

350 votes in all, but possibly the lowest winning total that I’ve known (definitely in fact). Any one list could have changed things about quite a bit.

350 votes! How many people provided that - about 40? How does that compare to previous years?

good work belboid! . As ever - a diverse mix - and some interesting new stuff to check out - and very pleased to see ILL getting so high in the chart.

the best bit about that nts sessions is after 6 hours of the most weirded out electro funk beats the fourth one is just an ambient/drone one.

It feels like a weird list this year. Not quite as eclectic/unpredictable as usual. Too many of the things I voted for in the list tbh.

Were there more long lists this year? Did that skew the voting slightly? Or do you only give points to, say, the top 20 of a list?

1) Autechre - Nts Sessions 1-4.
2) Iannis Xenakis - Persepolis. Karlrecords 2018 remaster. (technically a reissue but this is the first one that has been properly mastered, with no missing chunks, backwards reversals or wrong stereo separation, etc...)
3) Eli Keszler - Stadium.
4) Senyawa - Sujud.
5) Hailu Mergia - Lala Belu.
6) African Scream Contest Vol.2 - Benin 1963-1980. highly recommend sitting down with both of these comps if you like your funk music.
7) SOPHIE — OIL OF EVERY PEARL'S UN-INSIDES
8) Janelle Monae - Dirty Computer.
9) Gabor Lazar - Unfold. (warmed up to this one eventually!) still not as ruthless as ep16 but clinical in a different kinda way.
10) Neons Publishing - Creepin' In Memphis mixtape.
11) Pusha T - Daytona.
12) cardi b - Invasion of Privacy.
13) Earl Sweatshirt - Some Rap Songs.
14) Massimo Toniutti - Il Museo Selvatico.
15) Mark Fell - Intra.
16) Richard Devine - Sort\lave.
17) Heather Leigh - Throne.
18) Guttersnipe - My Mother the Vent.
19) Idris Ackamoor and the Pyramids - An Angel Fell.
20) Afrodeutsche - Break Before Make.
