Urban75 Album of the Year 2002

Turns out Chicks on Speed, Peaches, and Goldfrapp all released albums in 2003 instead, and Le Tigre went with 2001 and 2004, so there goes my guess that 2002 was probably a good year for electroclash. Anything else that came out then?
We've had Ladytron (who absolutely, definitely weren't electroclash ;)) and Toktok vs Soffy O.

City Rocker's Futurism comp was a definitive round up of the scene to date (but we can't vote for that). 2 Many DJs did a self released CDr As Heard On Radio Soulwax Pt. 2, but that didn't get an official release, so hardly anyone heard it, until 2003.

I remember these being big.View attachment 365404
Ms Dynamite is an AMAZING garage MC, but for her album there's no garage at all, it's a British RnB album, smoothed down and radio friendly, seemingly aimed at turning her into commercial pop star, which it was kind of successful at. For me it was a massive let down and missed opportunity. Give her 2 step beats and massive basslines to toast over ffs.

I don't think I've ever listened to the whole thing just the singles which were slightly better than most of Liberty X's output at the time.

My girlfriend at the time was well into Herbaliser so I listened to this album a lot, not by choice. I liked it at the time, but have never felt the need to listen since.

It still sounds good, IMO.

Classy stuff from start to finish

oh wow yes, i really rate this so highly
the best thing they ever did and the best broken beat-jazz-funk-soul whatever album of them all IMO
incredible musicianship on it, they make it sound so easy, every track is great, no need to skip
almost certainly will get my #1 spot

sadly they never matched it

It was definitely John Darnielle's year, All Hail West Texas has its moments:

But Tallahassee has No Children:

Both albums in one year is a ridiculous output, apparently he had a third album with the Extra Glenns that I've not heard:

Exellent sample fest of classic disco mashing it all together into an hour long disco-house party (unless you have it on vinyl for the separate tracks).

Not one of their albums I'm most familiar with, but Knife Play came out that year, if anyone wants a Xiu Xiu album to vote for:

I didn't listen to that much in 2002 but I was living with some people who worked in one of the record shops on berwick street and they always showed me new bits and I liked the first devendra banhart album "oh me oh my". it is a bit ruined for me now as everything he did after was shite so it seems the good part was all down to it being recorded on a dictaphone rather than much to do with his decisions but at the time I would have said this was the best.

Turns out Aesop Rock and Cannibal Ox didn't have records that year, but Antipop Consortium did:

I don't really know Atmosphere that well, but apparently they did GodLovesUgly that year:

Oh, and turns out Miss Kittin did two mix compilations that year:
Probably can't vote for them either though.

A somewhat disappointing Jon Spencer Blues Explosion album

Reverend Horton Heat also knocked out Lucky 7

If you fancy a bit of UK digi dub listening - big talent
(Netherlands not UK, but in that style)Proper space cadet dubbing
If you love dub and have never checked Twilight out I heartily recommend - and this is as up there as anything he put out

And since the last poll developed into a discussion of the genius of Bob Mould and Husker Du - have a BM track about how it all went wrong....

posting here to check out later
ETA: yes funky tasty!
Recloose also appeared on this amazing comp of Herbert's remixes in 2002.

The star of the show is his Moloko remix, though:

This was not quite a DJ mix, as the tunes were cut and pasted into new parts. But it's not an album either. Whatever it is, it's an incredible hour of some of the finest dub techno.

Jeff Mills' At First Sight seemed like a big change for him when it came out, with it's easy going spacey techno. Twenty years and 28 albums later it doesn't stand out so much from all the arty techno he's put out since, but it remains one of his best in this style.
