Urban75 Album of the Year 1983

Two Durutti Column albums this year: Another Setting which was their third official album and then a release called Amigos em Portugal. The latter which I prefer is actually two separate sides, the title name being the first and the second is Dedication for Jaqueline.

The intention with Amigos was that it was a trip to Portugal with some gigs and they would write a track for a Portuguese bloke who they knew from the Manchester music scene who now had a record label in Portugal to help him launch it. Vinni and Bruce actually wrote six songs and these were partnered with some already written songs recorded in the same studio to make a rushed and non announced album. More piano on this outing than previously and the second side could have done with a bit more reworking imo nevertheless some great moments of beauty and that brittle reflection and endeavour of Vinni creating music.

Sometimes the reviews on Discogs are perfect. This is one of them. Sleazy brilliance.
Best album you've never heard.

Absolutely amazing minimalist electro funk, with a bizarre, early industrial vibe. The lyrics are amazing, Exercise Your Ass Off is one of the best tracks ever made, with the sample running behind the vocals. If this was released by Cabaret Voltaire or Throbbing Gristle, noobs would lose their minds. This album is a masterpiece of the unexpected, freaky, weird-out funk and will blow your mind as easily as it blows something else.

Turns out Bad Seed and Mutiny were both 83, it's a great year for EPs. And there's a Cocteau Twins album I don't know.
Oh, and The Luxury Gap is 83:

Larry Levan produced the NYC Peech Boys album this year. It's not bad, but sounds a bit dated. The highlights are still brilliant, though.

And of course this classic

Really like chugger On a Journey off that but it's the title track that's like a philosophy to me.... Beautiful track...I made this little house dubplate edit bootleg set-starter of it this year, called it Chimes So Special, give it a try...

Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This

You've probably heard the title track too many times (if such a thing is possible), so remind yourself how great the rest of it is...

Eurythmics' Touch album was 1983 too, hard to choose between these, think Sweet Dreams just edges it.

The B-side to the single is my favourite Eurythmics tune. It's so good, and doesn't get much play for some reason.

Give us some pointers
Their 1983 album is almost the archetype of what people generally think of "80's music". It's all gated snares and montage music.

They released 6 singles off a 10 track album

The most well known ones are absolute cheddar, but there's a couple which are OK. I'd never heard of this, but apparently it was a single, too. It's pretty decent.

This is a great longish read slice of social musical history

Everyone's got some gaps in their music knowledge, and one of mine is that I don't really know Metallica beyond a passing acquaintance with the big hits. Don't think I've ever listened to an album from start to finish, with the possible exception of St Anger, which I think is not universally regarded as being their best work. Maybe it's time I change that. From listening to the first few tracks on Kill Em All, it's quite fun rocknroll, bit Motorheady. Was it later on that they got around to inventing Proper Thrash?

OK, got on to the part in Four Horsemen where there was a guitar solo, which was bad, but then the bit after that sounded like Proper Thrash.
