Urban75 Album of the Year 1963

That's 5 albums there and only one by an American. It does feel like the world is blossoming in terms of LP's in 1963. A tremendously exciting year.

5 - Duke Ellington and Coltrane

To me it seems like putting two huge names in the same room and getting them make an album is a bad idea. But actually this is great. Coltrane is respectful (possibly too respectful) and Ellington is on top form. The duke had a way of making every note count like its descended straight from heaven. I do apologise but I find myself fast forwarding through the Coltrane solos.

(Joint 4th by belboid scoring.)

4 - Thelonious Monk Quartet - Monks Dream

Having just revisited Monk's 1953 debut, 10 years on and he has a more polished sound but as peculiarly heavily spiderly staccato as ever. Totally unique. His tunes go... directions. I'll confess I still think the sax solos are skipable.

3 - Bob Dylan - The Free Wheelin'

Trying to look at this with 1963 eyes. This is a properly traditional folk (with a touch of blues) album and its firing on all cylinders. Subtly unique vocals, harmonica and guitar levied for engaging story telling that continually nods to those familiar traditions. Just really good. This is what they lost at Newport two years later, whatever they gained this is what they lost.

1 - Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

The glorious triumph of the underdog. I'm sure there's a lot to say about the composition but more basically the orchestration is Duke level and amid the heaving mass of sound there is space for improvisation and expression without indulgence.

I went with

Sandy Bull - Fantasias for Guitar and Banjo
Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
Mississippi John Hurt - Folk Songs and Blues
Eduardo Falú - Solos de Guittarra
Thelonious Monk Quartet - Monks Dream
Ellington/Mingus/Roach - Money Jungle
Melody Aces - Favourite Melodies
Roy Orbison - In Dreams
Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin'
Sun Ra and His Myth Science Arkestra - When the Sun Comes Out
Thomas Dissevelt - Fantasy in Orbit
Jean Ritchie and Doc Watson - at Folk City
The Poplin Family of Sumter, South Carolina - s/t
Fairuz - عودة العسكر Return Of The Soldiers
Stan Getz and Luis Bonfá - Jazz Samba Encore!
Jorge Ben - Samba esquema novo
Albert Ayler - My Name is Alber Ayler
Dick Dale and His Del-Tones - King of the Surf Guitar
Jimmy Giuffre - Free Fall
Thelonious Monk - Criss-Cross

On reflection Money Jungle should have been higher on my list. Years and years since I've listened to it. Thought about including the Khachaturian in the top 5 but it didn't feel like a unique enough release. Went backwards and forwards on the top two, but Sandy Bull interests me a touch more even if the Mingus is a more impressive album.

Cheers Knotted for doing this . I had the decorators in ( not a euphemism) so didn’t spend a lot of time on it as things had to be unplugged but heard some new stuff and will listen to the top 3 .
