Urban 75's Albums of the Year... The Results!

I particularly got a kick out of the technical studio trickery that was going on in it, especially in the first half,
-for example the 'invisible' kick drum pump on this track
<Ascending video>
Excellent. At least it looks like I chose the right track for the spotify playlist.

Yeah, their album this year kind of passed me by. I listened to a few clips, it didn't grab me immediately and I didn't go back to it. My favourite is still their pre-Antibalas album as The Daktaris.
ook The Daktaris! didnt know about that...

I really like the Actress album.

but even I'm a little confused by the idea it's the best of the year,
clearly not one for everyone, if you've come to it through a list of bestnesses then I can see why it might let you down. but it's very subtle and layered - takes repeat listens

try the Andy Stott one instead people
it's similarly kind of a headphone electronic record but more immediate and dynamic
it's fucking great.
thoughfully, someone has stuck the whole thing on the you tuberry

maybe it deserves a closer listen.
but I've always liked his stuff, until what I heard of that new record
disappointing

only one vote each for Tame Impala and Ms Apple.

There were 'many' votes - a couple less than last year, I think, but a fairly consistent number.

In a tight run battle, redsquirrel just fought off killerb and danny la rouge for the prestigious 'second best list submitted' award.

I'll stick up the Number 1's that didn't make it to the final list shortly too.

I voted for Tame Impala - means no-one else did or my votes weren't counted? :( Stewards Inquiry!

Anyway:
By far and away out front:
Mala - Mala in Cuba

Then in no particular order
Bruce Springsteen - Wrecking Ball
Bob Dylan - Tempest
Tame Impala - Lonerism
Chromatics - Kill for Love
First Aid Kit - The Lion's Roar
Lucas Santanna - O Deus Que Devastata Mas Tamben Cura
Laurel Halo - Quarantine
Staff Benda Bilili - Bouger le Monde

and - of course -,
Julian Cope - Psychedelic Revolution.

I didn't see the voting thread. I did nominate the tame impala record though so does that count as a vote?

check the T&Cs - PM'd votes only, count I'm afraid.

I could add you to the list of people to PM to remind them to submit a list for next year, if you like

Ok, lovely, thanks :)

tbh tame impala was about the only new record i bought last year so i probably couldnt put together much of a list. it seems to have been a bit of crap year for music in general. or maybe im just getting old.

It's just that you have to look for it in different places these days; no authoritative magazines, radio shows any more.
I didn't make a list this year maybe because I just listen to what sounds like I'd like and pay no respect to release date any more.

I thought I'd have difficulty making a list of twenty albums I did actually really like from this year. But pretty much as soon as I started, I got straight up to 50 albums I'd heard and kinda liked, there were easily another ten that I know I should like (still not got the Earth or Godspeed! for example).

Still a sucker for owt new. Spotify does help enormously for that.

what is spotify? i've looked at the website but it kind of scares me a bit. i would like to listen to these albums as i haven't heard any of them at all.

it's a free programme that allows you to listen to a vast amount of music. You get ads about every four songs unless you pay a fiver a month. Most things are on there these days, tho it is weaker on odd ATP style alt rock. There were 24 of the 30 on the main list, iirr

Imgaine a copy of iTunes that is already full of music. I pay for a premium account so I don't get ads. It's utterly transformed the way I listen to music. I haven't bought a CD for well over 2 years now. I've got the app on my PC, on my phone and on my WDTV live box.

10 quid a month and I must listen to 5 or 6 CD's a day via it. Bargain.

ah right thanks for the replies belboid and bees. so it's a bit like internet radio but like a jukebox? is that it? i guess i'm just going to have to give it a go really aren't I? :D

Pretty much, yeah. You can create playlists, share them, browse other peoples etc. The quality is good as well - 320kbs if you have a premium account.

Where it's really come into its own for me though is having it via my WDTV Live box. This is linked into my hifi, so I don't need a PC or laptop in the front room to listen to music, you select it all via the TV remote. No more cables trailing from a laptop to the hifi, no more piles of CD's everywhere. It's brilliant. The box was about £80, and a premium account is £10 a month as I said earlier. Comparing it to if I'd gone out and bought the CD's I reckon it paid for itself within less than a week.
