Ukraine and the Russian invasion, Feb 2022 - tangentially related crap

Interesting article covering the political trajectory of MMA's Jeff Monson

What a cunt. I remember people thinking he was great a while back.

Anyway, new WSJ documentary on Wagner, plenty on Ukraine in there, although their activities in parts of Africa are more eye opening, especially the sub-military stuff that's classic Russian State disinfo and propaganda warfare.

On May 30, a week before the dam's collapse, the Russian government approved a law aimed at "ensuring the safety of hydraulic structures" in the Ukrainian regions it proclaimed to have annexed in September 2022—the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, in Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia.

The legislation states that until January 1, 2028, investigations into accidents at hydro-technical structures that occurred as a result of military operations, sabotage and terrorist activities are prohibited. The decree was signed by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and came into effect on the day it was published.

Very tangentially related, but the arms trade and supply comes up in these threads and Ukraine does get mentioned a bit, so I think it's worth a listen if you have a spare hour or so to geek out in.

Perun on the risky and rather expensive world of military procurement. (I have no idea about the accuracy of this so he might be talking shit afaik, but generally his stuff has a good rep from people that do know.)

Suspect this might not be actual combat footage, but it’s a bit futuristic. We are getting close to the age of dystopian robowars or something.

Not being an expert on US domestic politics - has RFK jr always been a howling loon, or is it a road he's gone down after the Dems had the temerity to pick presidential candidates that aren't called Kennedy?

No idea when he disappeared down the rabbit hole, but he seems to have been down there since at least 2004, and way beyond anyone being able to dig him out.

ETA:

Kennedy Jr., a former environmental lawyer and Harvard Law graduate, veered into the fringe in the early 2000s with articles in Rolling Stone and Salon promoting conspiracies about vaccines and the 2004 election. He is the founder and chairman of the Children’s Health Defense nonprofit, a leading promoter of vaccine skepticism. The group’s influence surged during the Covid-19 pandemic and was the subject of widespread condemnation for a controversial film critics said targeted the Black community with vaccine misinformation.

Long term loon I think, pre-dates Covid stuff by years. Comes from the well trodden path of environmental concerns into this I think.

I've written elsewhere here about the tragic RFK Jr, who is "making some noise" (to use the stupid American slang term) as a presidential candidate. He's just playing the alt-right's greatest hits now.

Comforting news

20%. A CNN poll last month showed that about one-fifth of Democratic voters supported Kennedy's run for president. Some 60% planned to support Biden, and 8% favored Williamson.

Is his position widely shared? (I mean, wtf)
no, only with rightwingers who support putin because he's a goon and some kind of christian champion, and with leftwingers for whom NATO and the US are always and only the problem.

I called him tragic because if he'd shut up 15 or 20 years ago he'd be a hero. he was more responsible than any other one person for cleaning up the waters around NYC. here's an old page.

pretty unimpeachable statement here:

but the water has been polluted, see, which is what's turning children, "especially boys", trans.

He's the primary source of something ridiculous like 80% of all loonspud tropes. A one-man cancer on civilisation.

Apparently he was persuaded to run by Steve Bannon, and has campaign links with various far right / libertarian assholes - they’re basically using him to peel off a bit of the hippy/loon left-wing support from Biden. It’s a strategy of sorts. Expect a number of trumpists to register as democrats to boost him in the primaries.

A laughably poor Russian propaganda pamphlet reportedly found in a trench near Bakhmut. The phrase is something like ‘That’s the difference’.

The first frame appears to show a Russian soldier abducting a child, something they’re clearly not ashamed of. They also seem to have a thing against baths, the soapdodging freaks.

For the ones who like Big Amoured Things, there's a video going around of a Leopard 2A4 that the Ukrainians have bolted Kontact-1 onto. Definitely a weird sight for anyone who grew up Cold War. German tanks with Russian armour.
