Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-25

If Russia totally shut down the internet it would cause chaos, mind you he already has

Funny how so many other countries have done it, without causing that much chaos, sadly it's a common tool in the box.

Over the past year, billions of people all over the world have relied heavily on internet connectivity to keep in touch with family and friends, learn online, work from home and get vital information about the coronavirus pandemic.

Yet over the course of 2020, 29 countries intentionally shut down or slowed their internet communications at least 155 times, according to a new report published by Access Now, a non-profit digital rights group.

More bluster from the Putin regime.

Russia’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, has warned both Finland and Sweden that they will face “detrimental military and political consequences” if they attempt to join Nato.

Zakharova was speaking at a press conference in Moscow earlier this afternoon, where she warned that the Nato accession of either Finland or Sweden would spark a serious response from Moscow, "We regard the Finnish government’s commitment to a military non-alignment policy as an important factor in ensuring security and stability in northern Europe."

I thought is it was clear that I wasn't being that serious, but I am surprised they are only going to “partly limit” access to FB, in fact I am surprised they haven't cut the internet off completely. together with the phone networks, that's sort of expected in situations like this, so that's the bonus.

I guess it's good to remember things may be a little raw for some people here who may have friend or family links to either country.

Putin's accusations of neo-nazism in the Kiev government are all the more ridiculous considering that Zelensky is jewish
I would guess he was alluding to the far-right elements who were among the crowds during the EuroMaidan mass protests of 2013-2014. I’m not aware of any state-organised far-right or neo-Nazi policies enacted by the Ukrainian govt since 2014 & Lukashenko’s hasty departure.

So I agree with you and class Putin’s accusations about neo-Nazis alongside his claims of genocide in Donetsk, or the Ukrainian govt being composed of drug addicts - bollocks, in other words, but presumably intended for a domestic audience.

Could the accusations of Ukrainian govt drug addicts be a case of projection? If Putin who has long portrayed himself as a strong, tough, outdoorsman is now reliant on steroid or other medication he might well be unhappy at this.

(Incidentally, he may be on prednisilone or another steroid, but not necessarily for Parkinson’s - my Mum was prescribed it for rheumatoid arthritis. And she had similar facial changes - a rounding or softening of the features, she would ruefully speak of her ‘moon face’ 🙁)

Addicted to botox that's for sure lol

It must be a bit annoying, that the president is Jewish, of the country that you claim you need to invade so as to “denazify” it.

Isn't the association of Nazis and Ukraine something that dates back to when the Soviets had to deal with the UPA?

I couldn't understand why BBC journalists in Kiev were pronouncing the city name Kyiv, sounds like Kiiv, but it turns out only Russians call it Kiev and at the moment proper pronunciation is more important than normally.

I got lots of shit done when I was on high dose pred. The house was never so clean. I'm now more worried about what Putin is capable of.

The treatment of Parkinson's with steroids is a preventative (ie. aimed at avoiding deterioration as opposed to established treatments aimed at alleviating symptoms), and currently experimental thing as far as I am aware.
It is exactly the sort of thing I would expect his doctors to do if speculation is correct, though.

Not only Russians. British people as well.

And some of his family died in the Holocaust:

"His grandfather, Semyon (Simon) Ivanovych Zelenskyy, served in the Red Army (in the 57th Guards Motor Rifle Division)[19] during World War II; Semyon's father and three brothers were killed in the Holocaust"
