Things to look out for in Lidl and Aldi

I reckon fine to return if not opened/ used

I bought some whisky glasses at Lidl last year and one was chipped and had no issues returning it

I saw an interesting looking coffee rum in Aldi last week

I didn’t get it as I was already getting a bottle of gin, and I tend to stagger buying spirits (cost but also not wanting to look like a dipso at the checkout )
Till judgement has never bothered me. Mind you, I once did get a funny look from a cashier when my total shopping consisted of a 1.5 litre bottle of vodka, a box of tampons and a bag of frozen peas. (A good night in by any measure 😎)

I wonder if, like me, this beer reminds anyone of a certain popular Spanish brand…

How the cheeky bastards don’t get sued to fuck for stuff like this I’ll never know. But anyway, a very nice 5% lager, and I reckon in a blind test I’d likely choose it over San Miguel. £4.99 at Lidl for a 4-pack.

Aldi have really good white button mushrooms that are quite a bit cheaper than wonkies and they aren't so "BBF" that they go funny before I've finished eating them ... I eat a lot of mushrooms ..

I've been having a lot of issues the last couple of weeks with both mushrooms and bread growing mould sooner than expected, I think it must be down to increased condensation indoors due to the change in outdoor temperature.
I had to throw 4 mushrooms away yesterday cos they had grown some white fluff and I hate wasting food.

I put them on the top shelf of my fridge - sometimes I open the polythene - I suppose I ought to find out how to do it properly.
It is my fervent hope that within a few years I will be growing several species of fungi...
mould is a tough one - it probably is mould and not mycelium ...
If they've gone slightly smelly, I'll rinse them and chuck them in my stew early.
Usually they go in right at the end - just before serving...

My fridge is very damp due to a broken freezer compartment - it is OK temperature wise in terms of keeping food safely cool, but the drainage gets blocked with ice because of the knackered freezer bit and it's quite damp - it's fine for most things but if I put mushrooms in there it wouldn't go well.
I store them in a paper bag in the cupboard which is the best I can do with them, same with potatoes, like you should be able to store potatoes for ages (and my parents live in an early 20th century cottage courtesy of the council and have a larder which is great for that and root veg storage) but cos my flat is a bit warm and a bit humid they tend to sprout or rot quickly.

Thats gone up twice in the space of about 6 months then, as i remember first seeing it for £3.99, then noticing it was £4.49, at £4.99 its not actually cheaper than San Miguel, is it?

I know a graphic designer who specialises in this kind of rip-off and knows exactly how close you can go.
Might forward to him to a) see if it was him and b) see if he reckons this would be too near the knuckle for him.

I cannot do mental calculations that well, but I think it's still cheaper. My local corner shop, which is usually quite cheap, charges £7.49 for the pint-sized ones, so this is still cheaper, though admittingly by not that much...

I tried the caramel one - I think I’ve had that, the coffee is good. The flavour means I only ever want one

Tried the cheap Lidl cider (horrible stuff realised after buying that it was a strongbow knock off)

Update. Either Lidl has different prices at different branches, which is unlikely, or I remembered the price wrong the first time round. I went to another Lidl yesterday and they were £3.99 :)

My local Lidl is also confirmed as £3.99 (Sydenham), so must have used to be £3.49. Still not a great, if any, reduction on real San Miguel as even somewhere like Waitrose regularly does 10 cans for roughly a tenner.

So I went out to Aldi on Thursday morning (we have one a bit nearer than I thought, but due to its location South of t'river it's still a bus tube bus or bus bus ferry bus - and that's just going in one direction, not the round trip - trek!) to get one of these pans that everyone is apparently raving about and I got caught up in the excitement because who doesn't love a new pan?

I haven't used it yet but will report back when I do.

Also bought a tin and a silicone liner for the air fryer, planning to use the tin so I can air fry meat without sullying the air fryer basket, not sure what the silicone liner is for but it looked useful :hmm: And some new tea towels.

A bit of a naughty I think I've spotted at my local Aldi, this will be store wide as well

They stocked two own label baked bean ranges. One was the "premium" can't remember brand name but I think it started with a C. They also did a budget range "Bramwells(?). Main difference that I could tell being more of a thinner sauce and less actual beans in the cheap one

The premium was something like 45-50p / tin, with a multi buy offer on 4 tins. This range is no longer available.

The Bramwells range has now been priced up to the premium price with a similar multi buy offer, and a new budget range has been introduced at the lower price and I'm assuming a further skimp-flated product

Yeah they seem to have changed the branding on their budget range from what I can make out - I saw items of 2 different "brands" at the same price.
I am not a regular at Aldi due to relative difficulty of getting to a shop (as detailed above).

Lidl cheapo baked beans used to be the mutt's nuts, if you need an alternative - I would be hard pressed to tell the difference between those and Heinz last time I got them, although tbf I do prefer Branston beans as the sauce isn't as sweet!
I suspect a lot of these things are produced at the same factories though, at my trip to Aldi yesterday I picked up some of their cheap lager called "Galahad" and it tasted suspiciously similar to the Lidl own brand lager called "Excalibur".

Don't get me wrong, price wise, probably still half the price of a tin of Branston beans but they had a very good product which I was more than happy to buy, now I don't, shopping that element of my shop at Lidl (own brand) or just saying "fuck it" and occasionally getting Branston

Aye I mean Aldi, Lidl, Asda etc (all the cheaper supermarkets) are a bit of a trek from where I live - fuck knows why because we're in one of the poorest areas of London, but we've got 3 branches of Iceland which used to be good but have got ridiculously expensive these days for basics, a Co-op where every time I have bought veg it turned out to be mouldy when I got it home, and a Morrisons which is OK.
Everything else is a couple of miles away which equates to more than 2 hours round trip on the bus lugging shopping around, so I stock up on Branstons beans at Morrisons when they are on special. Morrison's own brand beans are surprisingly rank, considering the pretty good quality of a lot of their other own brand or Savers brand products.

Thanks for the tip - I bought two tins, a round one and a loaf one, and two silicon liners (think I was only charged for one though)

Just used the round one for black pudding and it was amazing.

Aldi have Silent night electric blankets. The single I paid £30 for is £20....
If you get your electricity from Octopus and are registered as being "vulnerable" (a categorisation with a ludicrously low threshold) one used to qualify for a free electric blanket, as we did. It is Mrs Voltz's most favourite thing in the world

Damn
I may qualify. I'm technically "diabetic" so got free covid and flu shots.
Oh well ...too late now.
