Things to look out for in Lidl and Aldi

Aldi have messed with their peanut butter again.
The shelves were stuffed with the palm oil version.
There was also a load of new recipe "wholenut" that looked rather light in colour and also turned out to contain palm oil.
So once more I have to resist the temptation of having a whole kilo of wholenut crunchy in the house :p
The big plastic tubs are great. Last me a month and 100% peanut.

Spatzle / spaetzle (sorry no umlaut) - German egg pasta, absolutely delicious in veg soup or even just in a plain broth - quite firm and interestingly chewy as long as you don't overboil them. Bought as a cheap alternative to posh Italian egg pasta and actually like these more:

once boiled chuck in the pan with fried onions and alpine cheese eg gruyere

Got this the other day and it was excellent:
Went back a few days later to get more but it'd sold out. Keep meaning to check again.
Aldi's doing an Australian Saperavi for a tenner at the moment, well, £9.99 or 9.95 or something like that.

I thought I'd try it because I had a really lovely Georgian Saperavi a couple of months ago in an independent wine bar/shop and bought a bottle to take home, which was about £19.99, iirc.

I wouldn't bother with Aldi's Australian Saperavi, save your money, save up, and buy one bottle of nice Georgian Saperavi (will try to find photo/details a d post later).

Will also look out for the Lidl Georgian Saperavi thanks.

Apparently it's Greek Week in Lidl from next Thursday, but there's no retsina shown on the website.

The main reason I go to Lidl for Greek Week is to stock up on Retsina - it's very difficult to get anything other than the OK but not superb (and really not very resiny) Kourtaki in shops here, and the Lidl 50cl pop-cap bottles of Retsina are far superior and a good price.
So if they don't have any this time round, I'm going to be a bit disgruntled.

Mrs Voltz returned home from a trip to our local Aldi clutching the first sparkling shiraz of the season. Always a bit of a tense moment when it was opened that evening as taste has varied over the years. Glad to report that this years is up to snuff

And ever closer looms the opening of our completely rebuilt and enlarged Lidl (still going to be bloody February '25 mind) that's over a year of a 15-20 mile round trip, basically negating all savings

Massive rearrangement of stock in my Lidl. Will take a while to find everything. More self service tills and they now have the scan your receipt thing. Bloke paid and was kicking off last night.

I haven't looked to see if the Aldi mince pies are vegan, but I can't be trusted near such things ..
Now that I have my microwave working again, all sorts of horrors are an option.
I had a baked potato yesterday
Those gigantic eating apples Aldi sell have been somewhat under-ripe, but they nuke very nicely - no sugar needed - a bit of unsweetened soy poured in ... perhaps I will end up succumbing to a jar of vegan mincemeat ...
