He's more of a traditional Republican, except he's even more of a fundamentalist Christian than most of Republicans. And, I think he was convinced to join the Trump ticket because he knew that Trump would probably get himself impeached. Being Vice-President to Trump is the golden ticket to a seat at the Resolute desk.

Pence is the one directly implicated by the resignation of the NSA guy. He was tossed under a truck in the resignation letter. If Trump goes, he goes.

Is there any evidence that he's sufficiently more competent than Trump? Yeah, I know it's not hard, but basically: would he himself get impeached in short order? The incompetence in this team doesn't exactly stop with Trump. So I wonder for all of this 'Pence would be scarier' talk, might he just end up with the same fate? He's a fanatic but does appear to be a grown up fanatic and he's at least been a governor of a fair sized state.

He'd roll back some much cooed over liberal victories in the culture wars that Trump really only pretends to care about but that's all a bit trivial compared to those uniquely unqualified twitchy tiny hands on the nuclear football.

The main problem would be if Trump went down Pence might be damaged but Gerald Ford managed after Nixon messily imploded. And I do think Trump's supporters would go berserk. This would be much worse than the bitter aftermath of Nixon's fall.

I don't agree with this. That rage is far more dangerous with Trump in power – racists in charge of justice, religious nuts setting civil rights agendas, climate-change deniers in charge of the environment, etc. Trump needs to go by any means necessary, as quickly as possible.
