The Trump presidency

I have to say that this is kind of a pointless thread now regardless of the quality of posts. Given that Trump is the president and is likely to remain so for a few years yet, a thread about Trump is basically just a catch-all US politics thread. Given the complexity of US politics and the number of different issues involved this seems pointless, and more importantly a distraction from specific points - we don't have a catch-all UK politics thread after all.

I'm of the opinion that it should be closed, with specific US points of politics being raised as specific threads as they always have been.

I agree, there is no reason why this thread shouldn't be useful but it has basically been ruined now. I support it being closed too!

Some members who live/have lived/have a lot of first hand experience in America are saying that they think others here with seemingly less direct experience are mistaken in some of their impressions

no you've been told your direct experience gives you some direct insight but no absolute truth claim to this seperate species of people you describe

It's an anonymous message board. Anyone can say what they want so long as mods allow it. I haven't noticed anyone being banned as a result of posts on this thread - correct me if I'm wrong. People are being challenged on things they say, but that's not the same as being "silenced."

Some members who live/have lived/have a lot of first hand experience in America are saying that they think others here with seemingly less direct experience are mistaken in some of their impressions. Is that really so surprising?
Calling people racist and wittering on about so-called horseshoe theory while ignoring posters who point it out when you post up articles by known racists is simple disagreement. Sure. Whatever.

Glory be - I haven't described Americans as a "separate species." I'm not claiming absolute truth about anything, either. I have suggested that there may be some misconceptions about what they are like, particularly where people have gained their understanding from indirect sources. That's hardly outrageous.

Not bothered either way.

bullshit, you've waved you're 'grew up in the states' card as an argument decider at every turn
Okay, do you think an American who's always lived say in Louisville, Kentucky who's read a lot about Britain, maybe met a few British people, will know more about what people who live in Manchester are like than someone who was born and bred in Manchester?

OK. I'm going to close this one and discussion of specific aspects of Trump's presidency or US politics in general can continue on threads specifically about those.
