This caused some consternation when there was no meat on the shelves at the supermarket, yet meat was being exported to China. North Carolina has made itself a sacrifice zone in the hope of attracting business and economic development. They've also devalued the cost of labor with "right to work (for less)" laws that have the effect of lowering wages. Their minimum wage is still $7.25. A lot of other places have raised the minimum wage with ballot initiatives put there by petition. As a result, its just made itself an even less desirable place for companies looking to relocate and bring higher wage jobs. The only companies that relocate there are only interested in bargain basement exploitation as a business model. Anyone who might move to a higher paying job there isn't going to like those living conditions.
