Thing is, if he'd stayed as a Tory I can imagine a scenario where he worked his way to the front bench at least, especially given how the Conservatives have got more right wing over the past 15 years or so.

We he can't buy tv advert slots here like he could in america. But he could buy internet ads. I doubt its as simple as throwing money at reform though.
