The Alt-Right

Seeing quite a few tweets from blokes in tech saying "we should have taken gamergate more seriously" and I'm just thinking wow wouldn't it have been helpful if there had been a loud and vocal group of people doing just that for a couple of years?

This is a very good thread for those who are new to the whole thing, and explains why it's so fucking infuriating now the men are coming in to declare "yes, this is a problem." (Click on the date to open the whole thread in twitter.)

For those who don't mind twitter, here's a run down of Spencer and Enoch's presentation. Perhaps not the reception they expected. But there are plenty in US who'd nod in agreement with them, so not something to laugh off.

Meanwhile a Saudi Arabian twitter-twatter wants to create a Wahabi State somewhere on the Arabian peninsula, claims that's been the Saudi dream all along. Don't worry though, the Kingdom of Saud is keeping an eye on the situation and will be sure not to allow things to get out of hand.

Handy guide to spotting a fascist:

Nice to see a ContraPoints video being shared! Contra is excellent and well worth supporting on YouTube and social media.

As is Shaun and Jen (Shaun).

As is hbomberguy (though he's more about pop culture) (hbomberguy)

As is Destiny: (Destiny)

Not all of those are particularly left wing - Destiny certinaly isn't (yet!) - but they are prominent and anti-Alt Right.

A load of this stuff is going on online (I was looking for but now can't find - typical!) a good article on the Alt Right man, Seattle4Truth, who murdered his father (Alt-righter 'Seattle4Truth' charged with killing father over conspiracy theories). In fact, almost all of it is going on online and the far right is much cleverer and much more active online - so far.

That Generation Identity site makes a big deal of it: "

2. Get active on the Internet

Create a Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter account, and use it to share content from the counter-culture and participate in debates.

Follow patriotic groups such as Generation Identity and Defend Europe on Twitter & Facebook.

Comment on relevant online articles, repost and share our content and participate in political surveys."

And it's worth doing the same. The more views YouTube videos have, the more visible they become in other people's recommendations - just starting a video and letting it play for about 30 seconds is enough to give it a view - the same is true of upvoting and even more so of sharing it on social media. Downvote stuff you don't like. If you see people breaking terms of service on sites report them - and although these companies are often run by libertarians they usually have terms that say: "Our products are platforms for free expression. However, we don't support content that promotes or condones violence against individuals or groups based on race or ethnic origin, religion, disability, gender, age, nationality, veteran status or sexual orientation/gender identity, or whose primary purpose is inciting hatred on the basis of these core characteristics."

Ha!

Good point - all other online political factions, I suppose.

Not really clever in a sophisticated way, but I think in gaming algorithms and acting in concert and in getting attention and getting their message from the fringes into the mainstream...

they've clearly been effective, but if we can say that the far right's targets range broadly from US style intersectional liberals and social democrats to the far left, then have they really been much cleverer and more active than all those?

e.g. there's been highly visible and energetic movements in support of Sanders & Corbyn and the socdem politics associated with both, and we've had a fair bit of discussion on here about the internet aspect of Corbyn's support and the extent of its influence, which while debatable is surely not insignificant. In both cases large numbers of people have been drawn in and got energised and thats still very apparent in their online presence.

and I don't think anyone could deny the effectiveness of the use of the internet by the intersectional liberal lot. they've built networks of websites and popular personalities, as well as developing extensive and vibrant net cultures especially on social media like tumblr and twitter. the dynamism and 'cultural threat' posed by them is I suppose reflected in the extreme bigoted reaction of stuff like gamergate.
