The way I see it in a lot of ways both these sets of assholes feed off each other . You get these identity politics twats taking over college institutions and the like , and then enforcing their brand of bullshit on everyone . That provokes a reaction and the people they piss off invite the likes of Yiannopolous to the college to give a lecture . To troll them , to wind them up into apoplexy . Basically to say " fuck you "
The whole Thing then becomes a self sustaining circus . The lefties can justify themselves by saying they're needed to prevent the " triggering " and emotional meltdowns caused by the alt rights appearance on campus or elsewhere. The alt right get to shoot fish in a barrel and spread their poison , now tinged with a veneer of initial common sense because their opponents are such massive fuckwits who predictably revert to type at every turn .
It's one massive shit show . They all need to be rounded up and sent somewhere .
The ultra pc mob have had a major hand in both the creation , empowerment and sustaining of this other lot .
The failure to rigorously challenge their bullshit from a left perspective simply ensured that challenge came from the right . Because it was inevitable it would be challenged. It badly neded challenged but the platform was completely left vacant to these scum .

This campus inspired lefty identity politics shitshow that went unchallenged for years and fed into a wider political discourse led directly to this far right shit show . It built up a reservoir of resentment .some of it justified . And that was all these scum needed to get a launching pad . It put firm ground under their feet . And it will continue to do so .

Most normal sane people aren't acquainted with the vocabulary used by both left-wing and far-right subcultures, and so they are going to take the phrase 'white genocide' at face value. Whereas understanding why Ciccariello-Maher's tweet is not what it appears to be is contingent on an understanding of both left-wing and far-right subcultures, not to mention and overly generous reading of his intentions.

...and unlike the left, the far-right are able to get their much easier to understand interpretation of the term 'white genocide' (or similarly stupid terms like 'white tears', 'dead old white guys' etc) not only across social media but also on right-wing talk radio, tabloid newspapers and TV.

While the right are using this 'culture war' stuff to very successfully build in-group solidarity against out-groups, the left are using it as a politics of self-expression which is inherently alienating to its participants let alone what is presumably the majority of its intended audience.

Alt-right has the 4chan section, meme city and lots of them video gamers, so I don't think it's surprising their aesthetics are heavily influenced by video games.

What actually has happened is a bunch of bored suburban white kids who didn't go to liberal arts college and somehow felt left out decided to check out what was happening on campuses, and were shocked at the "radical leftism" which by the way, has been going on since like the dawn of time, blow it way out of proportion, use sound bites and carefully edited video clips and spread them far and wide over the internet. I actually know a lot of people who do this. Some make money off it.

And there you have it. It's a click-bait war, and it isn't even real. But it's sad, because it's doing a lot of harm to a lot of really worthwhile causes (women's rights, anti-racism, gay/trans rights, etc)

for example, the thing that was going around a while back about the "lefty" college kids interviewed on campus saying they would support FGM as a women's right. About a dozen "randomly interviewed" students, all from the same school. There was outrage(!) on the part of these anti-identity politics types. Only, that was pretty much the only incident of any students, left-wing or not - or anyone in the US ever, for that matter, saying they support FGM. Hmm! Very odd. Could it be fake?
