Teenager who filmed himself raping girl 'deserves leniency because he's from a good family’-US judge

Those times when words fail you:

The 16-year-old girl was visibly intoxicated, her speech slurred, when a drunk 16-year-old boy sexually assaulted her in a dark basement during an alcohol-fuelled pyjama party in New Jersey, prosecutors said.

The boy filmed himself penetrating her from behind, her torso exposed, her head hanging down, prosecutors said.

He later shared the cellphone video among friends, investigators said, and sent a text that said, “When your first time having sex was rape”.

But a family court judge said it was not rape. Instead, he wondered aloud if it was sexual assault, defining rape as something reserved for an attack at gunpoint by strangers.

He also said the young man came from a good family, attended an excellent school, had terrific grades and was an Eagle Scout.
Prosecutors, the judge said, should have explained to the girl and her family that pressing charges would destroy the boy’s life.
So he denied prosecutors’ motion to try the 16-year-old as an adult.

“He is clearly a candidate for not just college but probably for a good college,” Judge James Troiano of Superior Court said last year in a two-hour decision while sitting in Monmouth County, New Jersey.

He led her down to the basement.
He barred the door so she couldn't get out and noone could get in.
He texted his mates.
He filmed himself raping her.
He shared the video.

'When your first time having sex is rape' is what he wrote.

He knew what he was doing. He's not an idiot, he is an entitled rapist, already.

I have no idea what school this bloke went to but the upper echelons of the US private school system are appalling macho places & there are always issees with inappropriate conduct from its male students. Most of which never amount to anything legal IYKWIM

I have a theory that a portion of rapists have already been told about how they shouldn't rape women and somehow do it anyway.

I have to think he got his entitled attitude regarding women from somewhere (as did the judge who excused this). I'm in no way saying it excuses it, in fact, it makes it worse. He had all kind of messages about how to behave, including "don't rape", and he choose the one that says he can rape a drunk girl and get away with it. Its part of an entire culture that minimizes the damage caused to women and girls, and portrays him as some kind of victim for having to take responsibility for his actions. And some day, he'll teach the same shit to his son.

Yeah, I can’t say what messages this kid was exposed to, just meant packaging “don’t rape” as a message is pretty limited when you're swimming against a current of contempt so heavy that kids will film themselves raping someone and circulate it amongst the group.

That, and the attitude of the judge are the most shocking things for me. And the way that all the discussion is about this boy and his future (money). Nothing really about the girl.

It's not even surprising anymore:(

I attended a 'Slut walk' protest (protesting for the right and freedom to dress as one chooses and go where one likes without being raped, sexual assaulted etc) and the crowd were presented with statistics that demonstrated that male perpetrators of rape and sexual violence were more likely to die of cancer or be run over by a bus then be convicted.:( It's a calculated risk that pays off a lot.

Sounds like he knew he'd get away with it. Which is exactly why he should be made an example of.

I suggest that portion is surgically removed from them.
