Some good stuff here, on the front page/best of the board

Most of the leading characters are fairly solid at their jobs but Worf is the one who always seems out of place. I get they wanted a Klingon to have a leading role but chief of security? It's those very fight-first Klingon character traits that make him unsuitable for the role. On a ship like the Enterprise, constantly involved in delicate diplomacy, would someone who constantly has to be stopped in his tracks by more senior officers because of his gung-ho "it's time for battle" attitude really have been given that position? I do like the Worf character and there are some good episodes (A Fistful of Datas etc) that revolve around him but you just can't imagine him ever getting that job.

edit - I realise what I posted may not have come across as I intended

Sky edited out the offending line when they broadcast it in 1992 whereas the BBC just binned the whole episode. Both of them later showed it unedited (Sky in 2006, BBC in 2007) It's always been available unedited on VHS/DVD though.
Controversies aside it's actually a decent episode that has some thoughtful things to say on the subject of terrorism and its consequences.

I must have seen it in 2006 or 2007 then.

I have it on DVD. It was also shown in full on Netflix. I haven’t seen it on Paramount+ but I’m sure it’s there too.

Relax, he was only born in the Klingon Empire. He's actually Belarusian, so probably wouldn't get the job these days :D

not sure what anyone was worried about he only got stripped of his klingon heritage and then killed durus the next probably chancellor of the klingon empire. killed the fella sisters when the came for revenge . fought against the empire at ds9

joined the klingon fleet during a war with the Dominion and then killed his old friend the then current leader of the Klingons

for a few moments become defacto leader of his entire race before naming his successor

barely a blip in intergalactic politics

also picard and riker knew when to rein him in repeatably for 6 seasons

Ha! Got to about 5mins and thought there can't be a lot more, only to check and find there was another 10mins to come!

Someone should do an alternate history based on how alien encounters would have ended up if Worf was making the decisions.

  • Haha
Reactions: Ax^
I see Discovery has quickly reverted back to its 'let's stretch this single plot point over an entire series' tactic again.
The problem is, TNG did exactly the same plot, but over the course of 45 minutes.

A friend of mine just described it as Star Trek National Treasure

Some Trek fans who loved the show over various incarnations just can't accept later incarnations because they're older now.

Not to say that newer incarnations aren't flawed, but every iteration of the franchise has its bad runs.

They're all dead

I really enjoyed the first 2-3 seasons of Discovery. So far I've forced myself to watch two episodes of the latest season, and it's really hard not to switch it off partway through, it's so tedious. Ten minutes of action and fifty minutes of whispered over-emotional conversations and hand-clasping.

Mmm… I’m sure there are such people out there but for me it’s not that at all. Perhaps I’m getting more stupid or forgetful as I grow older, but I found Discovery’s increasingly confusing and needlessly overcomplex plot lines, involving Nolanesque time-travelling paradoxes, not just exhausting but not reflecting of historical DNA of the show.

I’m happy with both self contained episodes and encompassing story arcs spanning over entire seasons of any TV franchise if done well. But Discovery became too much for me, and crucially lacking the entertainment value such concepts need. I have sometimes found myself wondering wtf was going on when watching certain sci-Fi stuff such as Tenet or Interstellar, but at least with Nolan you are still thoroughly entertained by every other aspect of the film.

As proof that all oldies can enjoy new ST spinoff series, I thought S3 of Picard was fucking superlative, as Strange New Worlds has been so far. So it can be done right and pleasing to all fans old and young and regardless of whether it’s a new spinoff set of characters or a sequel/ reboot of a classic one.

Watched the first two episodes of Star Trek Prodigy. It’s bloody good! Children friendly but not childish and enjoyable for grownups as well.

Cracking thrilling action, far better than S2 of Picard (though that’s not difficult I guess). A number of celebrity voices and at least one legacy character from the ST universe. On Nick- recommended.
Started watching it recently, now over halfway through the first season and it's good fun. Doesn't need prior knowledge of the mega franchise and family friendly without being saccharine. Reminds me of the Clone Wars (which have temporarily bailed on) but faster paced and more engaging.

I'm 8 episodoes into the final season of Star Trek Discovery and I'm really not buying this whole 'We know so little about the Breen even to the point we don't recognise one without it's suit' The Federation has known about the Breen for getting for a thousand years at this point and even fought some minor conflicts with them and it hasn't invested that much effort in learning about them? Surely they must at the very least have got their hands on the odd dead one after conflicts with them.
