Star Trek TV series(es) - general discussion of the franchise

for not even having a 10th of the budget of some of the studios doing the same thing
it is not have bad .. and is not ruined by Shatner talking to much

shame he could not do the same for the fella in real life

Something about fanfic pics. No matter how technically brilliant they are... they often don't get it right. Shots that linger far too long. The over sentimental and over respectful atmosphere...

Prefer the less reverential ones.

(Disclaimer - only watched a minute or two of this one - so it's unfair to judge what could be a masterpiece)

Hello everyone, how nice to meet you all!

So, I joined this site to discuss politics, but not only have I contributed to a Thread on Grand Designs, I'm now going to chip in about my main passion beyond music: Star Trek!

I am going to reiterate what has already been mentioned over the previous 41 pages (yes, I read them all), namely that DS9 is the best show by a mile (though I've yet to watch ENT, DISCO, LD, SNW or Prodigy), but my favourite is Voyager. Loved Janeway, the Doctor and Seven of Nine and it had the best opening credits by far:

I really enjoyed the DS9 documentary (and the HD footage looked amazing) and already have my pre-order in for the Voyager documentary Blu-Ray due at some point next year (I hope). But I am shocked and appalled that nobody mentioned this remarkable piece of work:

I cannot emphasise just how good this is. In fact, I did so twice on AV Forums as one of the Members there very kindly downloaded the episodes (they're still free!) and burned them onto Blu-Ray for me:

"The Box arrived today and I watched the first episode. The sets, props, costumes, lighting, editing, music, camera angles and movements were just spot on. The effects were really good and the main computer was voiced by Marina Sirtis! I enjoyed the story and the image blew up pretty well on a 65" OLED, with just some natural grain present. It is just so lovingly crafted and beautifully realised, I sat there with tears in my eyes!"

"Okay, have finally finished the series and all I can say is WOW!

If you loved "The Original Series" then you'll definitely adore this. To me, it is clearly the missing Season 4 that never got made as NBC pulled the plug and the writing reflects this - a great many episodes are continuations of "TOS" episodes, a "what happened next" scenario, that is just so clever, imaginative and rewarding.

You would honestly never know you were watching a fan-made show as the production values are simply fantastic, and it's made with such love and respect for the source material. A special mention must go towards the truly superb two-part finale, which is up there with any of the "official" two-parters across the various TV shows - it was simply wonderfully written, acted and just so moving.

I've put the Box right after my "TOS" 3 Season Blu-Ray Box Set on the shelf because it is Season 4 and it does "Continue"! What are you waiting for, people? Get downloading and burning onto disc whilst it's still free and available!"

danny la rouge - I think you would absolutely love this show seeing as you're a huge TOS fan.:)

Okay, so I didn't want my post to be too long and stuffed full of links, but I have a few other recommendations, too.

There's a ton of Star Trek books out there - stuff by the actors, the writers, the production staff, fans, critics and cultural commentators. Most of them take the franchise very seriously, but a few are happy to respect it whilst also exposing its flaws and poking fun slightly. If you're of that mindset (I am), then I'd really recommend you have a look at these:

(All three Seasons and the first six films)

(The first six Seasons + Generations film)

(All seven Seasons)

(Only the first four Seasons, sadly)

He didn't write a book on Voyager, but in a similar vein this one does exist:

(Only the first five Seasons)

Finally, like a few of you, big love to Galaxy Quest and especially, The Orville.

I managed to find a Seller on Ebay doing Blu-Ray copies of the latter, including all three Seasons, and they did a very good job considering it was only officially available on DVD for the first two Seasons.

The third Season changes style and tone rather dramatically, but rather like the franchise that spawned it, I don't really have a problem with any of this. I'm not bothered about canon nor rigid adherence to "rules" - it's all made up anyway!

Still not sure about the Free Enterprise film (I saw it once and didn't think much of it at the time), but still have a soft spot for this:

(Mostly Star Wars but there are frequent Star Trek references)

Will finish with this cracking joke:

So as a teacher of creative media I find it useful to refrence existing media with distinct style and iconography. For example one of my units involves doing a branded version of an existing board game. Like all those wierd monopoly games you see.

In my worked example I show how I would fuse Carcassonne and Star Trek.

I was trying to explain the premise to a student when they complained that they can't make up stuff like I can. It took me a moment because I thought they were talking about general creative skills but it wasn't. They thought I had Invented Star Trek and Carcassonne for the purpose of the lesson.

Now I'll give them Carcassonne. Even though I had linked to its wiki page it is kinda obscure.

But Star Trek? To have not heard of it so much you think your teacher Invented it?

It's sometimes surprising that what you or I might think of as universal, turns out to be obscure to many.

Carcassonne is awesome, by the way.

Why can't you burp in zero g?
I assumed its because your solids and swallowed air and fluids don't settle properly as they would under G so it all goes down the shitpipe rather than settling neatly in the stomach allowing for burpage. An ISS astro mentioned it on an 'ask me anything' chat.

see this explainer bit here:

Well, it actually says that you can burp in zero g, but you do "wet burps", with liquid also coming up.

right so you can burp but no one wants to unless they cannot help it which leads to increased farting. This came up cos the astro was asked if anyone had used farts for propulsion in zero g, to see if it works. He said wrong shaped nozzle.
