Star Trek: Picard [spoilers]

Haven’t seen this week’s episode yet but very much looking forward to it after seeing comments so far :)

It's a proper next gen film style revival. . . I am enjoying it, but wonder if it's elevated largely because everything trek has been absolute shit since enterprise started. . . bar lower decks and some of those short treks.

Oh, another one is out?

Is it every Thursday? (for some reason it’s not obvious on the PS4 Amazon app when the next one is coming out).

We're loving this as well - the sol system line is just a mis-step, IMO. There are plenty of other lines that we've loved, like Worf's "you find comfort in humour in humour in the discomfort of others."

And a lot of these shows/movies where they bring people back together later have everyone basically failing and/or hating each other, but this has some fractured relationships, and some bad things have happened along the years, but overall they've continued roughly in a way that fits with their characters.

We're hoping O'Brien will show up briefly - he's our favourite TNG/DS9 crossover character.

Yeah, it’s a teeny thing. I recalled later that it’s very similar to an example in a short Asimov (I think) piece on how not to write sci fi. Which made me wonder whether there was a little in-joke going on between writers.

But sorry about the derail anyway.

Looking forward to the new episode <fires up PS4>. :)

As soon as I saw Data I was eagerly awaiting the one masterfully crafted throwaway line that would explain why he looked like an old man. . . I was not disappointed. I wonder if I would have preferred it if every time somebody new saw him they would say "Is that Data? Why does he look so old and fat?" and someone has to explain why over and over again.

Wharf - "we may have lost one friend in battle, but we have gained another"
Gordie - "Is this data? Why does he look so old and fat?"
Wharf - "Because this time he has a body created with the true human aesthetic of wisdom of age with the hope that in that totality something/someone will rise to be the best of us."
Gordie - "eh?"
Wharf - "Altan Inigo Soong said it in a 30 second hologram he made just before he died"
Gordie - "Yeah but Data always had an ageing chip thingy, don't you remember me mentioning it all 'matter of factly', like everyone already knew it, in that episode where he met his mum. . . why did he say 'This time', every Noonian Soong robot so far apart from B4 has an ageing algorithm/chip thingy. . . and why make him so chubby?"
Wharf - "I don't know, maybe they needed more space to fit the extra RAM. Maybe he can do robocise and work some of it off while he is rising to to be the best if us"
Bevery Crusher enters
Bevery - "Is this data? Why does he look so old and fat?"
seinfeld slap bass music plays

. . . and 'B4'. . . That's a bit on the nose isn't it? It's like actually calling world war one/the great war "The World War Before World War Two".

I think there was a line to explain Q aging in the last season although i can't remember the excuss they came up with :D

So Picard has:

Died on the operating table because of a dicky ticker, but was resurrected by Q
Got turned into a borg
Has a terminal genetic disease
Got cured of genetic disease by being uploaded into an old mandroid
Was cloned in order to create a Romulan leader
Had his human remains stolen by the Dominion
Became the cultural archive for an entire alien race that died due to climate change

I suspect that all those museum pieces that were so carefully listed will play a big part in the climax. We were told the Starfleet has fitted AirTags to the current fleet, so the Titan can't just hide by changing its transponder code. But the Enterprise, Defiant, Voyager, Bounty, etc. don't have such, and so enjoy more freedom of movement.

It will be a cool and fanservicey moment when ships from every incarnation of the franchise come charging to the rescue. I wonder whether we will see Picard in the captain's chair of the retired Enterprise E, which I think survived it many engagements.

Ah fuck...just started to watch this but the dog! The ears! I am now totally uncertain that I can sustain the teeniest bit of love for Jean Luc for having a dog with cropped ears. Had to come away and moan - not sure I can get on with this at all.

Tell yourself it was a rescue.

No, 'fraid not. I think it is a fucking disgrace that a dog with brutally cropped ears is being given this legitimacy. Programme is finished for me (although I see Patrick Stewart's dog has uncropped ears at least).

It was a rescue dog that Patrick Stewart specifically requested be in the show.

So what. 99% of people watching this programme are not going to delve into some backstory - and even if they did, I fail to see how selecting a cosmetically deformed animal is any sort of message other than approval. I cannot see any rationale behind it and feel it is a massive mistake. I am disappointed as I rarely watch TV or streaming channels, but, having fond memories of watching TNG with my offspring, I had been looking forward to an orgy of Trekkie nostalgia.

They’ll overlap pretty heavily with the 99% who won’t be noticing a dog’s ears or paying it any mind when they see a similar one with floppy ears.

No, I don't think so. Ear-cropping, tail docking, extreme breeding (especially in the so-called 'bully' breeds) is controversial and damaging. Fashion and celebrity endorsement are strong drivers of this so I am honestly at a loss why this decision was made. It certainly isn't coming across as some sort of challenge to the £££/$$$ behind the many cruelties involved in the commodification of the domestic pet.
