Southend West By-election

Southend West
1997-present.

No question Labour or Libdems would be stupid to stand and won't anyway. Would be interesting to see if Galloway would see a niche, I can't see one for him right here right now though.

I'm sure far right and anti mask and anti vax types will see an opportunity and I guess one of the Extinction Rebellion splinters might do something though feels unlikely.

A byelection is just going through the motions. Labour and LibDems won't stand. They would just be wasting their money no matter how the seat became vacant so they might as well quote the Jo Cox justification and save the money.
I'm sure there will be a few fringe nutters/loons standing but they're basically just punting their deposits on whatever motivates them whether it's ego or just plain craziness.

That graph fascinates me. Labour improved its performance between '97-'01, which is rather unlike most other seats, while Corbyn came closest (from a Lab POV) to nabbing the seat off the Tories with a stunning more than doubling in vote in '17. And the Lib Dems were within a whisker of off taking it in '97 but now have the vote share of the Monster Raving Looneys.

The Corbyn doubling happened at the same time as in increase in the Con vote, as Corbyn seems to have hoovered up votes from both UKIP and the LibDems.

I think it is unlikely that the Labour & LibDem parties will stand, they'll treat it in the same way as Batley & Spen.
Something I would agree with.

But, there is no such "pressure" or convention with independent candidates.
Galloway might stand, but in the circumstances I hope his deposit gets lost.

However, I spotted some speculation a few days ago - no sure where, now, so I might not be able to find it again - that the dear leader was thinking about another snap / winter election. If that's true, then the situation gets more complex, as a general election only a couple of months later would really be a free-for-all, even in in this constituency. I think much of the Tory vote was down to the late David Amess personality, and some of that loyalty might not transfer.

Southend is a family fiefdom which until Saturday was on temporary Loan.

Democracy in action from parties denying voters a choice. Very much a right wing labour Party favourite election method. One member one vote one candidate. Blair and Brown's preferred method of election.

There's nothing to stop anyone standing as the The Continuity Labour Candidate and voting with the Labour whip in parliament. Perhaps you should have a crack?

I couldn't imagine a Corbyn led, Momentum dominated Labour Party being willing to contest this by-election.

I've heard a few mentions of this and just can't see why Johnson would do it. He doesn't need a mandate for anything at the moment so doesn't need a GE to push through any policies. Labour are shit so would be very unlikely to steal any seats. It would be a stupid waste of time.

I agree, but winning another easy election would give him more time to do his thing before he has to face a difficult one with a real opposition or problems start up within his party.
