Shoplifting on the rise

Self-service checkout users should get a discount. We're doing things that they used to pay people a wage to do, it's only fair that the savings should be passed on.
But then everyone will want to use them. This will impact on any workers at the tills, and possibly losing their jobs. Actually that's probably the management's aim, so maybe expect some form of discount soon!

Nice idea, but it would be a discount, it would be a surcharge for using staffed tills.

It should be bassed on how fast you are though, too many people seem to not have a clue what they are doing and hold everyone else up.

I'm not a lawyer, but if I have already paid for my items and I am prevented from leaving, then that's a pretty cut-and-dried example of false imprisonment by my judgement.
That wasn't the discussion. It was about forcing you to scan your receipt before leaving. Which is a possibility in the future. I'm not getting into this again, considering what happened on this thread last night. If you want to argue the point, do it with someone else.

Which would become false imprisonment the moment someone decides that they don't want to do that.

It's on-topic, I couldn't care less about whatever personal beefs you have with anyone else, and you're the only one putting forth the idea.

A bit prickish/ A prickish bit? Whatevs 🤷‍♀️
I recently learned 'doing a bit' is a phrase comedians use for telling a joke or funny anecdote, a skit or whatever.

I'd never heard the term before, but I kept hearing it within the last 2-3 months and figured it out. It's like what was an insider industry term has now seeped out into the general population and everyone's using it, or that's what it seems like to me.

It's a new one to me but cheers.

It was used heavily in Seinfeld as I recall

Anyway, I popped into this thread to see if anyone else had commented on the government promising a crackdown. I heard on the radio last night/early hours that Home Secretary Yvette Cooper was speaking out against it:

“We can’t carry on like this. This Labour Government will put neighbourhood police back on the beat in our town centres, with stronger laws on knife crime, shoplifting and assaults on shop workers to keep our communities safe... We will be a Government of law and order that puts the safety and security of our communities at its heart"

So more examples of Labour are the new Tories, this time the party of law and order.

I think it's fair enough, to say that attacks on retail and security staff is out of order. But I heard mention of creating a specific offence, which is nonsense. There are already crimes of assault, etc., which can be used to prosecute offenders.

But mostly it made me think 'Fuck you, Labour!' And 'Fuck you, Starmer, especially!'

Because if they hadn't voted against lifting the two child cap on child benefit, they might've addressed some of the poverty that leads people to shoplift!

Although I read an article that argued much of the increase in shoplifting wasn't poor individuals driven to shoplifting because of the cost of living crisis (for which, also take into account child poverty caused by inhumane government policy), it was caused by organised gangs stealing and selling stuff out of car boots or in pubs, etc.

But I'd argue the increased demand for the gangs wares is struggling impoverished people, they're at the root of this, whether they steal themselves or whether they buy the knock-off goods, it's because they can't afford supermarket prices.

2 things strike me about this; 1. why should anyone necessarily have a clue about doing work they have never been trained to do & 2. why should the unpaid 'workers' have to meet any notion of efficiency or productivity?

I'll go at any pace that I deem necessary to arrange my shopping effectively to minimise my expenditure.

Happy to use the manned desks or the scab tills; the cheese, marmite and razors are safely stashed long before we get near the tills.

On the razor, they make a nice beeping sound when you leave the store, why do some people stop in their tracks when they hear this? They then sheepishly head over to the security bod and ask him to look at what they have in their bags. Just carry on with a purposeful stride, unless they have seen you pockle the gear they'll leave you the fuck alone.
