Arla made profits of 1.5% of revenue in the first half of the year. If their profits were eliminated entirely the price of that Lurpak could drop by 10p. Would that mean people didn't "have to" nick it?

Supermarket profits are at a similar level.

Expanding the photo in Photoshop, I can see a couple of electric toothbrushes, an electronic thermometer and what appears to be a couple of ladyshaves, in fact all of it seems to be consumer electronics not groceries. People don't need to nick those.

it's been clear some companies are profiteering though, so there is a fair point in there about some rises not being remotely justified.

That's pretty fucking awful. Especially if you consider that this is an average, and hence a smaller number of higher increases may be masking wage shrinkage for large numbers of people. No wonder more people are on the rob!

They definitely are. Private sector pay rises are routinely boosted by the finance and business sectors hovering around 9-10% while retail and construction slip behind inflation at 5-6%.

Surely that’s because they are a highly plausible claimed item in place of something costlier? Heavier produce like potatoes isn’t usually offered loose. A large value of claimed bananas would be a sensible trigger for human intervention.
