Shameless, fawning, Alexandra O Cortez fan thread

and won't be remotely surprised if this thread ends in predictable disappointment

2 weeks later... the first Muslim Congresswoman, Ilham Omar, under disgraceful attack from all sides, accused of anti semitism for pointing out the corrosive influence of pro Israel lobby / PAC, AIPAC..... response from fellow newbie AoC ?
Sofar, nada ...

Ilham Omar tweeted "It's all about the Benjamins baby," which was interpreted as an anti-Semitic trope.

I think it's a stretch to criticise AOC's public silence on any given matter. I dare say there's enough meat on the bone with what she does say without starting in on what she doesn't.

fair enough pov, but feels ominous to me ...days after so famously / visibly railing against the inherent corruption at the heart of the system, much of it channelled through the lobby system, and AoC can't come out and support a comrade, the first Muslim member of Congress, who's been f*cked over by one of the more powerful / big spending, bi partisan ( and v much right wing evangelist backed ) lobby groups there is ?

Controversial Past Comes Back To Haunt Elliott Abrams At House Hearing
February 14, 2019
The Trump administration's point man on Venezuela was convicted of misleading Congress during the Iran-Contra affair. Abrams' past came up during a House hearing on Venezuela's political crisis.
Ilhan Omar is rocking the boat

I am concerned that though clearly capable and charismatic, AOC is also young and needs more nurturing, support and protection from the movement than having huge and probably unfair expectations placed on her.

This is true of her, and all the freshmen congressmen and women - especially those of colour, who are gay, etc. They face the full onslaught of racist, misogynist, homophobic hatred from the GOP side, as we've seen by the shedload already. But, they'll also be held to greater scrutiny than the straight, white identikit male versions, because so many different, competing expectations will be projected on them. People who identify with them because of their ethnicity, faith, gender, sexual orientation, etc. hope they'll prioritise issues related to these shared identities. Others will be looking them to NOT prioritise these, to prove they aren''t single issue and will serve wider interests. Folk on the left expect them to be avowedly left on everything, either because having "struggled," they must understand better than most why it's important (or they need constant convincing they aren't stereotypical Black, Muslim, Catholic, Jewish, Mother, whatever . . . .)

In short, Ocasio-Cortez and many of the other new legislators will be under the microscope, and they'll never please everyone who's expecting them to be exactly what they want them to be. I think the Democratic Party Leadership - Pelosi in particular, is playing it very well, not making a big deal of "missteps" and putting many of them in quite key positions so they have a chance both to exert influence and gain experience.

The movement? This is the democratic party that you're talking of right? That's what you're referring to?

I get an error when I try to access this page.

over here i get a delay, which is new. give it 10 seconds?
to be clear, I'd likely vote for the guy, but the attitude that “Democratic Socialism Is the Only Way to Challenge the System We Have” is ...

length of time AOC has spent so far failing to come out and support the Bern : 12hrs + counting
Why should she feel obliged to do that? Maybe she (sensibly) is waiting to decide who to back, if anyone? It's a huge field after all, and more than a year before primary season even kicks off. There's very little benefit in her backing any candidate at this point, and certainly not Sanders.

Greenwald was chastising her on Twitter for not endorsing him straight away. He's not her master, ffs. Human League's "Don't You Want Me" is now my earworm thanks to this.

I really don't care. Why do you care so much? Do you think she owes Sanders something? She was elected to Congress and she has a job to do - hint, it's not being head of a cheerleading squad, ffs.

Edit - There are TEN people who currently hold public office who have declared they are running for the Democratic Party nomination for US President. In 2016, there were only 6 (3 of whom didn't declare they were running until summer 2015). In 2008, there was a field of 8. So yes, considering how early it is, I'd say it's already a pretty huge field of candidates running for 2020.

If you sooo don't ' care' about the endorsement from the highest profile dem socialist politician in modern US history, for the 2020 dem soc Presidential candidate, who she repeatedly states inspired her to enter politics in the first place whilst working for his 2016 campaign ... then maybe yr on the wrong thread here ? ( not that I care or anything ... as am sure you don't )

You're the fucking weirdo who has some sort of stopwatch running. As you must surely be marking off on your schedule of unwarranted expectations: at the time of posting, it's less than 24 hours since Sanders announced his candidacy.

Nope, she owes him diddly squat. Plenty of people have worked for or with politicians and later supported a different candidate, or none. She's is now sitting in Congress as a Representative of the Democratic Party. She's working with colleagues in the House to pass legislation and to hold the executive to account. I'm deliberately not looking in depth at what the candidates are proposing, but I have seen some with policies that are as or more progressive than those Sanders has advocated in the past. For example, Warren proposed universal childcare, which is far more radical and will benefit far more disadvantaged people than free college. Perhaps she'll choose to back a different candidate, or none. She is allowed to choose you know.

The sight of people who support Sanders, seemingly the most vocal ones being white men, becoming increasingly strident in their insistence that Ocasio-Cortez must publically back Sanders, that she "owes" it to him, is not a good look. Not at all.

The stopwatch / time element wasnt meant as an altogether serious concept

(Edit : 24 hrs gone :( )

no worries, all made clear at the " people who support Sanders, seemingly the most vocal ones being white men " line .

( feel free to go and look up some of the facts / figures debunking the v cynical, divisive and largely Hillary campaign lead ' Bernie Bros ' dis - info / bullshit ... unless that's also on your list of things you deliberately don't want to know about etc )
